Post-Laser Surgery Symptoms: Eye Movement and Light Flashes - Ophthalmology

After retinal laser surgery, there may be sensations of movement or floaters at the edges of the vision?

On February 16, I experienced blurred vision and flashes.
During the examination, it was noted that there were holes in both eyes.
After undergoing laser treatment, the blurriness resolved, and there were no side effects.
On March 5, during a follow-up visit, I mentioned that I had a flash six days prior.
The examination revealed holes in both eyes again, and I underwent another laser treatment.
The day after the second laser treatment, I experienced the following symptoms:
1.
After the second laser treatment, in my right eye, I noticed moving objects on the far right side of my visual field (both black and white), but this does not happen frequently.
Usually, it disappears when I close my eyes.
Is there any danger associated with this? (I have had a type of floaters since elementary school.)
2.
In a completely dark room at night, when I close my eyes, I see sparks on the far right side of my right eye that appear and disappear repeatedly for about five minutes, after which they stop.
In my left eye, I see a very faint small white light in the lower left corner that also disappears after a while.
Is there any danger associated with this?
3.
My diagnosis states "lattice degeneration of the peripheral retina," but the doctors have all mentioned the presence of holes, which I assume to be retinal tears.
This doctor I see spends less than a minute on each consultation, and I do not receive much information.
After the laser treatment, I refrained from using electronic devices for two days and tried to rest, but I still have lingering symptoms that make me very anxious.
I am unsure if the dangers associated with these two conditions are the same.
Thank you.

Hello: 1.
The sensation of movement in the far right side of the right eye after laser treatment may be a temporary phenomenon related to the laser procedure or the treatment itself.
However, if there is persistent discomfort or worsening symptoms, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist for further evaluation.
2.
The appearance of sparks and faint light after closing your eyes in a completely dark room may be a normal visual phenomenon, but if these sensations persist or become more pronounced, it is recommended to seek an eye examination to ensure there are no underlying retinal issues.
3.
Regarding the diagnosis report mentioning lattice degeneration of the peripheral retina and the holes mentioned by the physician, these conditions are likely concurrent, as the retina affected by lattice degeneration is more fragile and susceptible to developing tears due to any external factors.

After undergoing laser surgery for retinal repair, it is not uncommon to experience various visual symptoms, including light flashes and visual disturbances. These symptoms can be concerning, especially when they involve changes in vision or the perception of movement in the visual field. Let's break down your concerns and provide some insights based on medical knowledge.

Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Visual Disturbances Post-Surgery:
- The perception of movement in your visual field, particularly after laser treatment, can be attributed to several factors. One possibility is that the laser treatment itself may have caused some temporary changes in the vitreous gel that fills the eye. This can lead to sensations of movement or flashes of light, especially if there is any traction on the retina.

- The phenomenon of seeing "fireworks" or flashes of light in a dark room is often related to the stimulation of the retina or the optic nerve. This can occur due to various reasons, including the natural aging process of the eye, vitreous detachment, or even residual effects from the surgery.

2. Flashes and Floaters:
- Flashes of light, especially if they are brief and occur in conjunction with eye movement, can indicate that the retina is being stimulated. This is often benign, particularly if there are no accompanying symptoms such as a sudden increase in floaters or a shadow in your vision.

- However, since you have a history of retinal issues, it is essential to monitor these symptoms closely. If they persist or worsen, it is crucial to seek further evaluation from your ophthalmologist.

3. Retinal Holes and Degeneration:
- The diagnosis of "grid-like peripheral retinal degeneration" suggests that there may be areas of weakness in the retina. While this condition can be stable, it is essential to keep an eye on it, as retinal holes or tears can develop, leading to more serious complications such as retinal detachment.

- Your doctors have mentioned the presence of holes, which may require ongoing monitoring. Laser treatment is often used to seal these holes and prevent further complications. If your doctor has confirmed that the laser procedure was successful and there are no new holes, this is a positive sign.

Risk Assessment
- Danger Level of Symptoms:
- The symptoms you describe, such as transient flashes and the perception of movement, are not uncommon after retinal surgery. However, they should not be ignored. If these symptoms are persistent or if you experience sudden changes in your vision, such as a curtain-like shadow or a significant increase in floaters, you should seek immediate medical attention.

- It is also important to differentiate between benign post-surgical symptoms and those that may indicate a complication. Regular follow-up appointments with your ophthalmologist are crucial for monitoring your condition.

Recommendations for Management
1. Follow-Up Care:
- Ensure that you attend all scheduled follow-up appointments. These visits are essential for monitoring the health of your retina and addressing any new symptoms that may arise.

2. Rest and Eye Care:
- It is wise to limit screen time and give your eyes adequate rest, especially in the initial weeks following surgery. This can help reduce eye strain and may alleviate some of the visual disturbances you are experiencing.

3. Communication with Your Doctor:
- If you feel that your concerns are not being adequately addressed during your appointments, consider seeking a second opinion or asking for a more detailed explanation of your condition and treatment plan. Clear communication with your healthcare provider is vital for your peace of mind and understanding of your eye health.

In conclusion, while some visual disturbances post-laser surgery can be expected, it is essential to remain vigilant and proactive about your eye health. Regular monitoring and open communication with your healthcare provider will help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly. If you have any further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your ophthalmologist for clarification and support.
