Is a follow-up appointment necessary to review the results for a urinary tract infection?
Last week on Monday, I experienced slight lower abdominal pain and mild discomfort while urinating.
On Tuesday of the same week, I went to see a doctor.
They conducted a urinalysis and mentioned that they would perform a bacterial culture, with a follow-up appointment in a week to discuss the results.
I was prescribed medication, which I took as directed, but I did not experience any discomfort in my body.
However, I checked my health records, and part of the urinalysis results came back normal, except for an OB (occult blood) result of 1+.
The bacterial culture results will be available in a few days.
Although I am not feeling any discomfort, I am unsure whether I should return for the follow-up appointment to review the results.
Thank you for your response.

Dr. Sun Hongshun reply Urology
Hello Ms.
Chen: The OB+ result indicates a slight presence of occult blood, which may be due to inflammation or residual microscopic hematuria.
There are many potential causes for hematuria, including kidney stones, unknown reasons, fragile bladder mucosa, or even cancer.
I recommend that you have another urinalysis to clarify your condition.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

After experiencing symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI), such as lower abdominal pain and discomfort during urination, it is essential to follow up with your healthcare provider, even if you feel better. The initial evaluation typically includes a urinalysis and urine culture to identify the presence of bacteria and any underlying issues.
In your case, while you have completed your prescribed medication and are currently asymptomatic, the presence of "OB 1+" in your urine test indicates a trace of blood, which could be a sign of residual inflammation or other underlying conditions. Although the urine culture results are pending, it is crucial to understand that the absence of symptoms does not necessarily mean that the infection has been completely resolved or that there are no other issues at play.
Returning for a follow-up visit is advisable for several reasons:
1. Confirmation of Infection Resolution: The urine culture will provide definitive information about whether the bacteria that caused the infection are still present. If the culture shows growth, it may indicate that the initial treatment was not effective, and you might need a different antibiotic or an extended course of treatment.
2. Evaluation of Hematuria: The presence of blood in the urine (hematuria) can have various causes, including urinary tract infections, kidney stones, or even more serious conditions like tumors. A follow-up visit allows your healthcare provider to investigate this further, potentially through additional tests such as imaging studies or a cystoscopy.
3. Preventing Recurrence: If you have a history of recurrent UTIs, discussing preventive measures with your doctor is essential. This may include lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, or prophylactic antibiotics, especially if you are prone to infections after sexual activity or menstruation.
4. Monitoring for Complications: In some cases, untreated or recurrent UTIs can lead to complications, such as pyelonephritis (kidney infection) or chronic bladder issues. A follow-up allows for monitoring and early intervention if necessary.
5. Addressing Other Symptoms: If you experience any new symptoms, such as persistent pain, changes in urination, or any other unusual signs, a follow-up visit is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment.
In summary, even if you feel better, it is wise to return for a follow-up appointment to review your urine culture results and discuss any further evaluations needed due to the trace blood in your urine. This proactive approach will help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly and can help prevent future urinary tract infections. Always prioritize your health and communicate openly with your healthcare provider about any concerns you may have.
