Persistent soreness and numbness in the right calf after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine?
Hello, doctor.
I received my third dose of Moderna, and starting the next day, I've been experiencing soreness and numbness in my right calf and foot.
This sensation has been quite persistent, lasting for several hours and occurring multiple times a day.
(Previously, after the first dose of AstraZeneca, I experienced intermittent numbness that would come and go throughout my body.) Currently, I am on the third day of this soreness and numbness.
There are no spots on my skin, and I don't feel any weakness in my leg.
Should I seek medical attention for this, or should I just monitor the situation and go in if something changes? Thank you.

Hello, what you described are indeed possible symptoms of the vaccine.
It is recommended to rest for a few days, and it should gradually improve.
If there is no improvement or if the symptoms continue to worsen, then medical attention is necessary.
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info
After receiving the third dose of the Moderna vaccine, experiencing persistent discomfort in your leg, such as soreness and numbness, can understandably raise concerns. While many individuals may experience mild side effects after vaccination, such as soreness at the injection site, fatigue, or mild fever, your symptoms seem to be more localized and persistent, which warrants further consideration.
1. Understanding Vaccine Side Effects: Vaccines, including those for COVID-19, can elicit various side effects as the immune system responds. Common reactions include soreness, swelling, or redness at the injection site, as well as systemic reactions like fatigue, headache, and muscle aches. However, persistent symptoms, especially those that are localized and not resolving, should be evaluated further.
2. Possible Causes of Leg Discomfort: The symptoms you describe—persistent soreness and numbness in the right calf—could be due to several factors. These may include:
- Vaccine Reaction: While rare, some individuals may experience more pronounced reactions to vaccines, including localized nerve irritation or inflammation.
- Circulatory Issues: If the discomfort is accompanied by swelling, changes in color, or if the leg feels cold to the touch, it could indicate a circulatory issue that requires immediate attention.
- Musculoskeletal Strain: Sometimes, changes in activity levels or posture after vaccination can lead to muscle strain or discomfort.
3. When to Seek Medical Attention: Given that your symptoms have persisted for three days and are not improving, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. You should seek medical attention if:
- The discomfort worsens or spreads.
- You experience additional symptoms such as swelling, redness, warmth, or changes in skin color.
- You develop new symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, or dizziness, which could indicate a more serious condition.
4. Monitoring Symptoms: While it is essential to seek help if symptoms worsen, it is also important to monitor your condition. Keep track of any changes, including the frequency and intensity of the discomfort, and note any new symptoms that may arise.
5. Communication with Healthcare Providers: When you do seek medical advice, be prepared to provide detailed information about your vaccination history, the onset and nature of your symptoms, and any other relevant medical history. This will help your healthcare provider assess your situation more effectively.
6. Potential for Long-Term Effects: Although most vaccine side effects resolve within a few days, some individuals report lingering symptoms. If your symptoms persist beyond a week or significantly impact your daily activities, further evaluation may be necessary to rule out other underlying conditions.
In summary, while mild and transient symptoms after vaccination are common, persistent discomfort, especially if localized and not improving, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to health concerns, particularly after receiving a vaccine. Your health and well-being are paramount, and seeking timely medical advice can help ensure any potential issues are addressed promptly.
