Sexual development, average penile length at rest?

Hello, doctor.
When I was in the first year of junior high school, I had not yet developed, and my penis was about 6 to 7 centimeters when not erect.
However, by the second year, I started to masturbate, and since I had not developed, I could only produce a clear fluid.
At that time, I often masturbated for up to half an hour.
In the second semester of junior high, I noticed that I had developed pubic hair and was able to ejaculate, but my penis became very short when not erect, measuring only about 4 to 5 centimeters.
I also became very sensitive to cold; even though I wore many layers, I always felt a chill, and I could feel my scrotum retracting.
My penis would become extremely small, as if blood flow was restricted.
I remember that in the past, regardless of the season, my penis size remained relatively consistent, but since the second semester of junior high, I have clearly felt that my penis has shrunk significantly.
My scrotum rarely hangs down, especially during exercise or in very cold weather, where my penis almost retracts to just the glans, with the wrinkled foreskin tightly around it, making it seem like the rest has disappeared.
This has been very troubling for me.
I do not have erectile dysfunction, as my erect length can reach 16 centimeters, but often after masturbating, my penis becomes very small again.
I am now 18 years old, and this condition has accompanied me since the second semester of junior high.
Additionally, when swimming, my penis shrinks significantly, and during swimming class, I have to deliberately conceal it; otherwise, my wet swim trunks would expose my retracted penis completely, which is very distressing for me.
I hope the doctor can help clarify my concerns.
By the way, I currently masturbate at most once a day, totaling no more than seven times a week.
Thank you, doctor.

Hello: Penile issues should be evaluated by a physician.
In some individuals, part of the penis may be buried in fat, which can be identified during a physical examination, especially in those who are overweight.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding the changes in penis size and function during puberty can be a source of anxiety for many adolescents. It is important to recognize that puberty is a complex process influenced by hormonal changes, genetics, and individual development. Here, I will address your concerns and provide some insights into the typical changes that occur during this stage of life.

1. Penis Size Variability: During puberty, the penis undergoes significant growth, but this growth can vary widely among individuals. It is common for some boys to experience a growth spurt in penis size earlier than others. The average size of an erect penis for adult males is typically between 12 to 16 cm (about 4.7 to 6.3 inches) in length, but many factors can influence this, including genetics and hormonal levels. Your reported size of 16 cm when erect is within the normal range, and it’s important to remember that size does not determine masculinity or sexual capability.

2. Changes in Size During Puberty: It is not unusual for the penis to appear smaller when flaccid, especially during colder temperatures or when the body is in a state of stress or anxiety. The body’s natural response to cold is to constrict blood vessels, which can lead to a temporary reduction in size. This is a normal physiological response and does not indicate any underlying health issues.

3. Erections and Sexual Function: The ability to achieve an erection is a sign of healthy sexual function. It is also normal for the penis to change size and appearance after ejaculation. Following ejaculation, the penis may temporarily shrink in size as blood flow decreases, which is a natural part of the sexual response cycle.

4. Puberty and Hormonal Changes: During puberty, testosterone levels rise, leading to the development of secondary sexual characteristics, including the growth of pubic hair and changes in body composition. The timing of these changes can vary greatly among individuals. Some boys may notice changes in their body hair and penis size earlier, while others may take longer to develop.

5. Psychological Factors: Anxiety and self-consciousness about body image are common during adolescence. It’s important to understand that many of your peers may be experiencing similar feelings and concerns about their bodies. Open discussions with trusted friends or adults can help alleviate some of this anxiety.

6. When to Seek Help: If you continue to feel concerned about your penis size, function, or any discomfort you experience, it may be beneficial to speak with a healthcare professional. They can provide reassurance, conduct any necessary examinations, and address any underlying concerns you may have.

7. Healthy Practices: Engaging in healthy lifestyle practices, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and good hygiene, can positively impact your overall health and well-being during puberty. Avoiding excessive stress and practicing relaxation techniques can also help manage anxiety related to body image.

In conclusion, the changes you are experiencing are a normal part of puberty. It is essential to be patient with your body as it goes through these transformations. If you have ongoing concerns, consider reaching out to a healthcare provider who can offer personalized advice and support. Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and many others share similar experiences.
