Swelling and pain in the corner of the eye?
Hello, doctor.
My left eye corner has been slightly swollen for a while.
Recently, due to a stye, I noticed that the swelling has worsened.
After researching online, I found that the affected area is likely around the nasolacrimal duct or the lacrimal caruncle.
Although it is usually swollen, it only hurts when I press on it.
Compared to my other eye, it feels like there is a protruding duct.
Could this be due to the stye? Also, if the stye resolves but the corner of my eye is still slightly swollen, can I wear contact lenses? Thank you, doctor.

Hello Mr.
Bai: It could possibly be a stye.
If it resolves, you should be able to wear orthokeratology lenses.
I recommend that you seek medical evaluation for a proper check-up.

More Info
Eyelid swelling can be a concerning symptom, especially when accompanied by pain or discomfort. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing swelling in the corner of your left eye, which has worsened due to a stye (or "針眼" in Mandarin). A stye is a common condition caused by an infection of the oil glands in the eyelid, leading to localized swelling, redness, and tenderness.
The area you mentioned, near the nasolacrimal duct (the tear duct), can indeed become swollen due to a stye. When the oil glands become blocked or infected, they can cause inflammation and swelling, which may feel like a "bulging tube" as you described. The pain upon pressing the swollen area is also consistent with inflammation and irritation associated with a stye.
Causes of Eyelid Swelling
1. Styes (Hordeolum): As mentioned, these are infections of the oil glands in the eyelid, leading to localized swelling and tenderness.
2. Chalazia: This is a blockage of the oil glands that can cause a painless lump in the eyelid, which may become swollen if infected.
3. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to pollen, dust, or cosmetics can cause eyelid swelling and irritation.
4. Infections: Other infections, such as conjunctivitis (pink eye), can also lead to swelling.
5. Fluid Retention: Conditions such as sinus infections or systemic issues can cause fluid retention, leading to swollen eyelids.
Treatment Options
1. Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress to the affected area can help reduce swelling and promote drainage of the stye. This should be done several times a day for about 10-15 minutes.
2. Topical Antibiotics: If the stye is infected, your doctor may prescribe antibiotic ointments or drops to help clear the infection.
3. Oral Antibiotics: In more severe cases, oral antibiotics may be necessary.
4. Avoid Squeezing: It is important not to squeeze or pop the stye, as this can worsen the infection or spread it.
5. Good Hygiene: Keeping the area clean and avoiding eye makeup until the swelling resolves can help prevent further irritation.
Regarding Contact Lenses
As for wearing contact lenses (塑型片) while experiencing eyelid swelling, it is generally advisable to avoid wearing them until the stye has healed completely. Wearing contacts can irritate the eye further and may lead to complications, especially if there is any discharge or infection present. Once the stye has resolved and the swelling has subsided, you can gradually reintroduce your contact lenses, ensuring that your eyes are comfortable and free from irritation.
When to Seek Further Medical Attention
If the swelling persists even after the stye has healed, or if you experience increased pain, redness, or vision changes, it is important to consult with an eye care professional. They may need to conduct a thorough examination to rule out other underlying conditions, such as a chalazion or other infections.
In summary, your eyelid swelling is likely related to the stye, and with appropriate care, it should improve. Warm compresses and maintaining good hygiene are key steps in managing this condition. Avoid contact lenses until the swelling has resolved, and consult your doctor if symptoms persist or worsen.
