Breast tenderness and nipple enlargement after premedication?
Hello Doctor, my girlfriend has been taking Mei Shi Nong for two months and switched to Ai Ji this month.
She finished the Mei Shi Nong on February 19, and her period started on February 22.
She began taking the new Ai Ji on February 26, the fifth day of her period.
We had sexual intercourse on February 28, using a condom throughout, and we checked to ensure it did not break.
Since then, we have had sexual intercourse approximately 2 to 6 times a week.
Recently, she has noticed that her breasts have become larger and fuller, and the left areola and nipple are more prominent.
I would like to know if the changes in her breasts and nipples are caused by the contraceptive pills.

Dr. Yuan Tianmin reply Breast and Thyroid
This could certainly be related to the female hormones in the contraceptive pills, but it is best to have a breast ultrasound to ensure everything is okay.

Breast changes, including enlargement and nipple sensitivity, can indeed be influenced by hormonal contraceptives, such as the birth control pills your girlfriend has been taking. The primary mechanism behind these changes is the hormonal fluctuations induced by the pills, which contain synthetic versions of estrogen and progesterone.
When a woman begins taking birth control pills, the hormones in the pills can lead to various physiological changes in the body. These changes can include breast tenderness, swelling, and an increase in breast size. This is due to the way these hormones affect the breast tissue, promoting the growth of glandular tissue and fluid retention. The increase in breast size and sensitivity can be particularly noticeable during the first few months of starting a new contraceptive method, as the body adjusts to the new hormone levels.
In your girlfriend's case, since she switched from one type of birth control pill (美適儂) to another (愛己), it is possible that her body is responding to the new hormonal composition. The timing of her breast changes, occurring shortly after the switch, supports this idea. Additionally, the hormonal changes can also lead to increased sensitivity of the nipples and areolas, which may explain the observed enlargement of the left areola and nipple.
It's important to note that while these changes are common and usually not a cause for concern, they can vary significantly from person to person. Some women may experience pronounced changes, while others may notice little to no difference. If the changes are accompanied by pain, unusual discharge, or any other concerning symptoms, it would be advisable for her to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Regarding the sexual activity you mentioned, since you used condoms and confirmed they did not break, the risk of pregnancy is significantly reduced. However, it's worth noting that hormonal contraceptives can sometimes cause irregularities in menstrual cycles, and the timing of ovulation can be affected by the hormonal changes from the pills. If there are any concerns about potential pregnancy or if her menstrual cycle becomes irregular, a pregnancy test or consultation with a healthcare provider may be warranted.
In summary, the breast and nipple changes your girlfriend is experiencing are likely related to the hormonal effects of the birth control pills she has been taking. These changes are generally normal and should stabilize as her body adjusts to the new medication. If there are any persistent or concerning symptoms, seeking medical advice is always a prudent step.
