Pain in the lower left rib cage?
Hello doctor, I have been experiencing soreness in the lower left side of my rib cage for the past couple of days, especially when I cough or turn over while lying down.
A few weeks ago, I had a throat bacterial infection caused by post-nasal drip, which led to some coughing and phlegm production.
Could you please tell me what might be causing this pain? Do I need to seek medical attention immediately? Thank you.

Hello: Based on your description, your symptoms are more indicative of pain caused by a muscle strain, which may be related to the excessive coughing from your previous upper respiratory infection that led to the muscle strain.
It is advisable to monitor the situation, and if the symptoms persist, I recommend visiting a pulmonology clinic for further evaluation.
Thank you.

Left rib pain can arise from a variety of causes, and understanding the underlying reasons is crucial for determining whether medical attention is necessary. Based on your description, the pain you are experiencing in the left rib area, particularly when coughing or changing positions, could be attributed to several factors.
One common cause of rib pain is musculoskeletal strain. This can occur from activities that involve heavy lifting, twisting, or even prolonged coughing, which can strain the muscles and ligaments around the rib cage. Given that you mentioned having a throat infection and a persistent cough, it is possible that the repetitive action of coughing has led to muscle strain or irritation in the intercostal muscles, which are located between the ribs. This type of pain is often sharp and can be exacerbated by movement or deep breathing.
Another potential cause of your rib pain could be related to the respiratory system. Conditions such as pleuritis (inflammation of the lining of the lungs) or pneumonia can lead to pain in the rib area, especially when coughing or taking deep breaths. If your cough has been productive (producing phlegm), it may indicate a respiratory infection that could be affecting the pleura or lungs, leading to discomfort in the rib area.
Additionally, it is important to consider the possibility of referred pain from other organs. For instance, issues related to the spleen, stomach, or even the heart can sometimes present as rib pain. However, these causes are less common and usually accompanied by other symptoms.
In terms of when to seek medical attention, there are several red flags to consider. If your rib pain is accompanied by any of the following symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation promptly:
1. Severe or worsening pain: If the pain becomes unbearable or significantly increases in intensity.
2. Shortness of breath: If you experience difficulty breathing or a feeling of tightness in your chest.
3. Fever: A high fever could indicate an infection that may require treatment.
4. Coughing up blood: This is a serious symptom that warrants immediate medical attention.
5. Radiating pain: If the pain spreads to other areas, such as the shoulder, neck, or arm, it could indicate a more serious condition.
If your symptoms are mild and primarily related to muscle strain, you might consider conservative management strategies such as rest, applying heat or ice to the affected area, and over-the-counter pain relief medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. However, if the pain persists or worsens, or if you develop any concerning symptoms, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment.
In summary, while your left rib pain may be related to muscle strain from coughing, it is important to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience any alarming signs or if the pain does not improve with home care, seeking medical attention would be the best course of action.
