Red, swollen lump in the armpit?

Hello doctor, for the past 2-3 months, I have developed red, swollen, and hard lumps under my left and right armpits that resemble peanuts.
They are red and swollen, usually appearing in the morning, and take about one to two weeks to disappear.
Currently, I have another one developing under my right arm.
What should I do? Should I see a doctor or get it checked? Aren't there many lymph nodes in the armpit? Could this have an impact? Please provide me with some information.
Thank you, Xiao Hong.

Hello Xiaohong: 1.
The condition you described is likely superficial folliculitis or hidradenitis.
It commonly occurs in hot weather and is related to individual constitution.
It is advisable to keep the underarm area clean and dry in daily life.
2.
It is usually best to consult a physician in person for any questions, as it is safer.

Hello, 小紅. Thank you for your question regarding the red, swollen lumps you've been experiencing in your armpits. Based on your description, it sounds like you may be dealing with a condition that could involve swollen lymph nodes or possibly other skin-related issues.
Firstly, it's important to understand that the armpit area contains a significant number of lymph nodes, which are part of the body's immune system. These lymph nodes can become swollen for various reasons, including infections, inflammation, or even more serious conditions. The fact that these lumps appear red and swollen suggests that there may be some underlying inflammation or infection.

Common causes of swollen lumps in the armpit include:
1. Infections: Bacterial or viral infections can lead to swollen lymph nodes. For instance, conditions like cellulitis (a bacterial skin infection) can cause redness, swelling, and warmth in the affected area.

2. Lymphadenopathy: This is a term used to describe swollen lymph nodes, which can occur due to various reasons, including infections, autoimmune diseases, or malignancies. If the lumps are persistent and painful, this could indicate a more serious underlying issue.

3. Sebaceous Cysts: These are non-cancerous lumps that can occur under the skin. They are usually painless but can become inflamed or infected, leading to redness and swelling.

4. Allergic Reactions: Sometimes, allergic reactions to deodorants, soaps, or other products can cause localized swelling and redness.

5. Skin Conditions: Conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa, which is a chronic skin condition that causes lumps in areas such as the armpits, can also lead to painful, swollen lumps.

Given that these lumps have been recurring for the past 2-3 months and typically take one to two weeks to resolve, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Here are some steps you can take:
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: It is essential to see a doctor, preferably a dermatologist or an internist, who can perform a physical examination and possibly order tests to determine the cause of the lumps.
- Diagnostic Tests: Your doctor may recommend blood tests, imaging studies (like an ultrasound), or even a biopsy if they suspect a more serious condition.

- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms you may experience, such as fever, night sweats, weight loss, or changes in the lumps (size, color, or pain level). This information can be helpful for your doctor.

- Avoid Self-Diagnosis: While it’s tempting to search for answers online, self-diagnosing can lead to unnecessary anxiety or mismanagement of your condition.

In conclusion, while swollen lumps in the armpit can be benign, given the duration and characteristics you've described, it is prudent to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. Early diagnosis and treatment can help address any underlying issues and provide you with peace of mind. Please take care, and I hope you find relief soon!
