Right Upper Abdomen Pain After Sports Injury: When to Seek Medical Attention? - Surgery

Hit the upper right abdomen while playing ball?

Last Friday (4/1), I bumped my right upper abdomen while playing basketball.
It hurt a lot at the moment, but after resting for a while, it felt better.
However, I still occasionally feel a twisting sensation in my abdomen.
After eating, my abdomen feels uncomfortable, and my digestion hasn't been great.
Yesterday, I had a large black stool, but today it has returned to normal.
I'm not sure if that was blood in my stool.
My abdomen is not distended, and there is no tenderness or rebound tenderness upon palpation.
Should I expect this to improve on its own, or do I need to go to the hospital? If I need to seek medical attention, which specialty should I consult? Thank you.

Hello, this sounds more like an upper gastrointestinal bleeding issue.
It is recommended to seek immediate medical attention from a physician in gastroenterology, family medicine, or general surgery (gastrointestinal surgery).

Experiencing right upper abdomen pain after a sports injury can be concerning, especially when accompanied by symptoms like discomfort after eating and changes in bowel movements. Based on your description, it seems that you sustained an injury while playing sports, which initially caused significant pain but seemed to improve with rest. However, the persistence of discomfort and the occurrence of black stools raises some important considerations.

Firstly, the black stools you mentioned could indicate the presence of blood in the gastrointestinal tract, a condition known as melena. This can occur due to various reasons, including bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract, which may be related to the injury you sustained. It is crucial to take this symptom seriously, as it may require immediate medical evaluation. Even if the pain has subsided, the presence of black stools warrants further investigation to rule out any serious underlying issues, such as internal bleeding or organ injury.

Given your symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention. You should consider visiting a healthcare provider who specializes in gastrointestinal issues, such as a gastroenterologist, or you may also go to an urgent care facility or emergency department, especially if the symptoms worsen or if you experience additional concerning signs such as severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, or dizziness.

In terms of diagnosis, the healthcare provider may perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies such as an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan to assess for any internal injuries or abnormalities. Blood tests may also be necessary to evaluate your overall health and check for signs of bleeding or infection.

Regarding your question about whether this will resolve on its own, while some minor injuries may heal with time and rest, the presence of black stools and ongoing discomfort suggests that this is not a situation to be taken lightly. It is essential to have a professional evaluation to ensure that there are no serious complications from your injury.

In summary, I strongly recommend that you seek medical attention as soon as possible, particularly due to the concerning symptom of black stools. Early intervention can help prevent potential complications and ensure that you receive the appropriate care for your condition. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to health issues, especially those involving abdominal pain and gastrointestinal symptoms.
