Erection hardness
Hello doctor, in the past year or two, I've noticed that when I watch adult films and masturbate, my erections are not as firm as they used to be.
If there is no manual stimulation, I quickly lose my erection.
I also no longer experience morning erections every day like I used to.
During intercourse, I only feel relatively firm during foreplay, but when it comes to penetration with a condom, I notice a significant decrease in hardness.
I masturbate about once a day; is this considered excessive?

More Info
Erection hardness and sexual health are complex topics that can be influenced by a variety of physical, psychological, and lifestyle factors. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing changes in your erectile function, which can be concerning and may lead to anxiety, especially when it affects your sexual performance.
Understanding Erection Hardness
Erection hardness is primarily determined by the blood flow to the penis, the health of the erectile tissues, and the psychological state of the individual. A firm erection is achieved when blood fills the erectile tissues (corpora cavernosa) and is retained there, preventing blood from flowing back out. If you notice that your erections are not as hard as they used to be, or if they soften quickly during sexual activity, several factors could be at play:
1. Psychological Factors: Anxiety, stress, and performance pressure can significantly affect erectile function. If you are worried about your ability to maintain an erection, this anxiety can create a cycle where the worry itself contributes to erectile difficulties. This is often referred to as "performance anxiety."
2. Physical Factors: Conditions such as hormonal imbalances, vascular issues, or nerve damage can affect erectile function. However, given your age and the absence of significant medical history, these factors may be less likely.
3. Lifestyle Factors: Excessive masturbation, especially if it is done in a way that is not conducive to healthy sexual function, can lead to temporary changes in erectile quality. However, masturbation itself is a normal sexual activity and, when done in moderation, is not typically harmful.
4. Substance Use: Alcohol and other substances can impact sexual performance. While moderate alcohol consumption may not cause issues, excessive drinking can lead to difficulties in achieving or maintaining an erection.
Addressing Your Concerns
1. Masturbation Frequency: Masturbating once a day is generally considered normal and not excessive for most individuals. However, if you feel that your technique or frequency is affecting your sexual performance, it might be worth experimenting with reducing the frequency or changing your approach.
2. Erection Quality: If you find that your erections are not as firm as they used to be, consider evaluating your overall health. Factors such as diet, exercise, sleep quality, and stress management play significant roles in sexual health. Regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep can enhance blood flow and improve erectile function.
3. Psychological Support: If anxiety about sexual performance is a concern, consider speaking with a therapist or counselor who specializes in sexual health. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can be particularly effective in addressing performance anxiety.
4. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the changes in your erectile function persist or worsen, it may be beneficial to consult a urologist or a healthcare provider specializing in sexual health. They can conduct a thorough evaluation to rule out any underlying medical conditions and provide tailored advice or treatment options.
5. Communication with Partner: Open communication with your partner about your experiences and feelings can help alleviate some of the pressure you may be feeling. Understanding and support from your partner can significantly reduce anxiety and improve your sexual experiences.
Conclusion
In summary, changes in erection hardness can be influenced by a multitude of factors, including psychological stress, lifestyle choices, and physical health. While occasional fluctuations in erectile function are normal, persistent issues warrant further investigation. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and seeking professional guidance when needed can help restore confidence and improve sexual health. Remember, you are not alone in this experience, and many men face similar challenges at various points in their lives.
