Rapid Heartbeat After Moderna Vaccine: Causes and Concerns - Cardiology

After receiving the Moderna vaccine, there was an increase in heart rate?

Hello Doctor: After receiving the second dose of the Moderna vaccine, the next day my heart rate suddenly increased to 160 beats per minute, and my blood pressure rose to 160 (normally around 110).
I immediately went to the emergency room, took two doses of Cardolol, and underwent some blood tests, which showed no abnormalities.
About two hours later, my heart rate decreased to 100 beats per minute, and I returned home to rest.
Now I feel that my resting heart rate is faster than before (from 80s to 90s), and a more significant issue is that when standing, my heart rate goes up to 110 beats per minute, and with slight movement or lifting objects, it can reach 130 beats per minute.
What could be the cause of this? What actions should I take? Will it continue to increase? During a previous health check, there was a slight finding of "mitral valve regurgitation" and "high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP): 0.27," which was slightly elevated.
I look forward to your response, thank you! PS: I also experienced this phenomenon after the first dose of BNT, but it occurred four weeks later, and at that time, the doctors were uncertain if it was related to the vaccine.

Dr. He Dongjin reply Cardiology

Hello, getting vaccinated is intended to trigger an immune response in the body, and experiencing discomfort is normal.
Each person reacts differently to each vaccine.
It's advisable to monitor any short-term reactions, and you may consider taking some medication temporarily.
It shouldn't lead to increasingly rapid heart rates; once the acute immune response subsides, everything should be fine.
If you still feel unwell, please follow up with a cardiologist.

After receiving the Moderna vaccine, experiencing a rapid heartbeat and elevated blood pressure can understandably cause concern. Your reported symptoms of a heart rate spiking to 160 beats per minute and blood pressure rising to 160/110 are significant and warrant careful consideration. It’s important to note that while some individuals may experience transient cardiovascular symptoms following vaccination, these reactions can vary widely among different people.

The rapid heartbeat (tachycardia) you experienced could be attributed to several factors. One possibility is a physiological response to the vaccine itself, which can stimulate the immune system and potentially lead to a temporary increase in heart rate. This is often due to the body’s immune response as it reacts to the vaccine, which is designed to provoke an immune reaction to prepare the body for potential future exposure to the virus. Additionally, anxiety and stress related to receiving the vaccine or concerns about its side effects can also contribute to an increased heart rate.

Given your history of mild mitral valve regurgitation and elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), it’s essential to monitor your cardiovascular health closely. Mitral valve regurgitation can sometimes lead to symptoms like palpitations or increased heart rate, especially during physical activity. The hs-CRP level indicates inflammation in the body, which could also play a role in your symptoms, although it is not specific to any one condition.

In terms of management, here are several steps you might consider:
1. Follow-Up with a Cardiologist: Since you have a history of heart-related issues, it would be prudent to schedule a follow-up appointment with a cardiologist. They can conduct a thorough evaluation, including an echocardiogram, to assess the function of your heart valves and overall cardiac function.

2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a detailed log of your heart rate, blood pressure, and any symptoms you experience, including when they occur and any potential triggers. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in determining the underlying cause of your symptoms.

3. Lifestyle Modifications: Consider lifestyle changes that can help manage your heart rate and blood pressure. These may include regular, moderate exercise, a heart-healthy diet, stress management techniques (such as mindfulness or yoga), and avoiding stimulants like caffeine.

4. Medication Review: Discuss with your doctor whether your current medications, including Cardolol (a beta-blocker), are appropriate for your situation. Adjustments may be necessary based on your symptoms and overall health.

5. Hydration and Rest: Ensure you are well-hydrated and allow your body adequate rest, especially if you notice that physical activity exacerbates your symptoms.

6. Avoid Overexertion: Pay attention to your body’s signals. If standing or walking increases your heart rate significantly, consider limiting these activities until you have further evaluation.

As for your concern about whether your heart rate will continue to increase, it’s difficult to predict without further evaluation. Some individuals may experience a temporary increase in heart rate that resolves over time, while others may need more targeted interventions.
In conclusion, while your symptoms following the Moderna vaccine may be concerning, they are not uncommon. However, given your medical history, it is crucial to engage with your healthcare provider to ensure that any underlying issues are addressed and to develop a management plan tailored to your needs. Remember, your health and well-being are paramount, and proactive monitoring and communication with your healthcare team are key to navigating these symptoms effectively.
