Missed birth control pill?
Hello, I started taking the contraceptive pill from Yuezhi on April 5 (Tuesday).
I usually take it at 10 PM, but during the first week, I didn't take it at the exact time and took it between 10 PM and 11:30 PM.
Is that still effective? Also, I forgot to take it on April 15 (Friday) and took two pills on April 16 (Saturday), but I didn't take them at 10 PM; I took them close to midnight.
Will that still be effective?

Combined oral contraceptives (COCs) must be taken at the same time every day, and correct usage can achieve a 99% effectiveness rate in preventing pregnancy.
Each type of combined oral contraceptive comes in different pill counts, so it is important to follow the instructions for taking the medication.
If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered, and the next pill should still be taken at the usual time.
If a missed dose of an active pill exceeds 12 hours, in addition to taking the missed pill, it is advisable to use an additional barrier method of contraception for the next seven days.
If a missed dose exceeds 24 hours, stop taking the current pack of contraceptives and refrain from taking them for seven days (including the days the pills were missed), then continue with the next cycle.
If a missed pill occurs and there is no expected withdrawal bleeding during the placebo period, pregnancy should be suspected.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

When it comes to the effectiveness of birth control pills, consistency and timing are crucial for maintaining their efficacy. Birth control pills, particularly combination pills, work primarily by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and thinning the uterine lining. However, their effectiveness can be compromised if doses are missed or taken irregularly.
In your case, you mentioned that you started taking the birth control pill on April 5th and typically take it around 10 PM. However, during the first week, you took it at varying times between 10 PM and 11:30 PM. Generally, taking the pill within a 3-hour window of your usual time is considered acceptable and should not significantly affect its effectiveness. Therefore, as long as you were taking the pill consistently within that time frame, you should still be protected against pregnancy.
However, the situation changes when you missed a dose on April 15th. If you forget to take a pill, the recommended action depends on how many pills you have missed and when you remember to take them. Since you mentioned that you took two pills on April 16th (the day after you missed one), this is the correct approach. For most combination pills, if you miss one pill, you should take it as soon as you remember, even if that means taking two pills in one day. This should help maintain the pill's effectiveness.
That said, taking the missed pill later than your usual time (close to midnight instead of your regular 10 PM) does not significantly reduce its effectiveness, especially since you took it within 24 hours of the missed dose. However, if you miss a pill and do not take it within 24 hours, the effectiveness of the pill may be compromised, and additional contraceptive measures (like condoms) should be used for at least the next seven days.
It's also important to note that if you miss two or more pills in a row, the guidelines change. In such cases, you may need to follow specific instructions based on the type of pill you are taking, which may include using backup contraception and possibly skipping the placebo pills to avoid a withdrawal bleed.
In summary, based on the information you provided, your birth control pill should still be effective despite the missed dose, as long as you took the missed pill promptly and maintained a relatively consistent schedule. If you have any further concerns or experience any unusual symptoms, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance. They can provide you with the most accurate information based on your specific situation and the type of birth control you are using.
