Tingling and itching sensations in the hands and feet?
I have recently been experiencing a tingling and itching sensation in my palms and soles.
The discomfort alleviates during movement but returns when I am still.
However, it does not affect my sleep.
Could this be Restless Legs Syndrome?

Tingling and itching sensations in the hands and feet can be quite concerning, and while they may lead one to suspect conditions like Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), it is essential to consider a broader range of possibilities. RLS is characterized by an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, typically accompanied by uncomfortable sensations, primarily occurring when at rest, and often relieved by movement. However, the symptoms you describe—tingling and itching in the palms and soles that improve with activity but do not disrupt sleep—may not fit the classic profile of RLS.
There are several potential causes for the sensations you are experiencing. Peripheral neuropathy is one possibility, which can result from various factors, including diabetes, vitamin deficiencies (especially B vitamins), alcohol use, and certain medications. This condition often presents as tingling, numbness, or a burning sensation in the extremities. Another possibility is a condition known as meralgia paresthetica, which occurs when the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve is compressed, leading to tingling or numbness in the outer thigh, but it can sometimes radiate to the legs and feet.
Additionally, conditions such as anxiety or stress can manifest physically, leading to sensations of tingling or itching without any underlying neurological or vascular issues. Allergic reactions or skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis could also cause localized itching and tingling sensations.
Given that your symptoms improve with movement and do not affect your sleep, it may be less likely that you are experiencing RLS. However, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend blood tests to check for vitamin deficiencies, diabetes, or thyroid function, and possibly nerve conduction studies if neuropathy is suspected.
In the meantime, consider keeping a symptom diary to track when the sensations occur, their duration, and any potential triggers. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in determining the underlying cause of your symptoms.
In summary, while your symptoms may initially suggest Restless Legs Syndrome, they could be indicative of other conditions such as peripheral neuropathy or even anxiety-related sensations. A comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare professional is essential to arrive at an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.
