Abnormal bleeding
Hello Doctor: I would like to ask about some recent symptoms I experienced.
I had ovulation bleeding a while ago, but the amount was minimal.
This month, my period started on April 15 and ended on April 21-22.
On the 22nd, after having intercourse with my husband, I noticed some light brown blood (not sure if it was residual blood).
On April 23, I received my first dose of the Moderna vaccine, but on the evening of April 27, I suddenly experienced bleeding again, similar to the last two days of my period, with a small amount of dark blood and some small clots.
I consulted a doctor who mentioned it could be a side effect of the vaccine.
I would like to know if this bleeding is caused by the vaccine or if it is still ovulation bleeding.
Yu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/04/28

Hello, it is possible.
Just observe for now.
If there is still bleeding, it is recommended to see a gynecologist.

It sounds like you're experiencing some concerning symptoms following your recent vaccination and menstrual cycle. Let's break down your situation to better understand the potential causes of your abnormal bleeding.
First, it's important to clarify that both vaccination and hormonal changes related to your menstrual cycle can lead to variations in bleeding patterns. The Moderna vaccine, like other vaccines, can cause side effects, but these are typically systemic, such as fever, fatigue, or soreness at the injection site. While some individuals report changes in their menstrual cycle after vaccination, the evidence is still emerging, and the exact relationship between vaccines and menstrual irregularities is not fully understood.
In your case, you mentioned experiencing light bleeding during ovulation and then having a slight amount of brownish blood after intercourse shortly before receiving the vaccine. The brownish color often indicates older blood, which can be a normal finding at the end of a menstrual period or during ovulation. The bleeding you experienced after the vaccine could be attributed to several factors:
1. Hormonal Fluctuations: The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones, and any changes in these hormone levels can lead to unexpected bleeding. If you were close to ovulation or experiencing hormonal changes, this could explain the bleeding.
2. Vaccine Response: While the Moderna vaccine is primarily designed to elicit an immune response against COVID-19, some individuals report changes in their menstrual cycle following vaccination. This could be due to the body's immune response, which may temporarily affect hormone levels.
3. Physical Activity or Intercourse: Engaging in sexual activity can sometimes cause light bleeding, especially if there is any irritation or if the cervix is sensitive. This could explain the brownish discharge you noticed after intercourse.
4. Other Factors: Stress, changes in diet, or other health conditions can also impact menstrual cycles and bleeding patterns.
Given that your doctor has suggested that the bleeding could be a side effect of the vaccine, it's essential to monitor your symptoms. If the bleeding continues, becomes heavier, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms (such as severe pain, dizziness, or signs of infection), you should seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while the vaccine may have contributed to your symptoms, it is also possible that your bleeding is related to your menstrual cycle or other benign factors. If you have ongoing concerns or if your symptoms change, it would be wise to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may recommend blood tests or imaging studies to rule out any underlying issues, especially if you have a history of abnormal bleeding or other gynecological concerns.
In the meantime, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and keeping track of your menstrual cycle can help you better understand your body and any changes that occur. If you have any dietary concerns related to your menstrual health or overall well-being, consider discussing these with a nutritionist or your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
