Nasal cavity issues

Hello Doctor, I have been experiencing recurrent peeling inside my nasal cavity for the past couple of months, approximately every two days.
Initially, it was only on one side, but now it occurs on both sides.
When it’s just a small area, it doesn’t itch, but when it becomes a larger patch, I feel the urge to remove it.
I used to use my fingers, but after a few times it became painful, so now I use tweezers to carefully pull it out.
It’s a bit troublesome to have to use tweezers each time it peels.
Currently, I don’t have any other discomfort.

Two weeks ago, I noticed a raised area in my mouth, directly below my nose (in the center of the upper oral cavity).
Although it is centered, it is slightly swollen towards the right.
When I touch it with my tongue, it feels like a small bump, and when I look in the mirror, I can see a tiny white spot.
It is completely painless, and it has shrunk in size over the past few days, making the white spot less visible.
However, I can still feel the bump when I touch it with my tongue.
I am wondering if this could be related to my nasal issues.

What could be the possible causes of the peeling and the raised bump? What can I do to improve this condition? Thank you, Doctor.

More Info

Understanding nasal peeling and bumps can be quite concerning, especially when accompanied by discomfort or changes in appearance. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing two primary issues: recurrent peeling of the nasal mucosa and a small bump in the oral cavity. Let's break down the potential causes and solutions for these symptoms.

Causes of Nasal Peeling
1. Dryness and Irritation: One of the most common causes of nasal peeling is dryness. This can be due to environmental factors such as low humidity, especially in winter months or in air-conditioned spaces. Additionally, frequent nose blowing, especially during a cold or allergy season, can irritate the nasal lining, leading to peeling.

2. Allergic Rhinitis: Allergies can cause inflammation of the nasal mucosa, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and nasal congestion. This inflammation can also result in peeling skin as the body attempts to heal itself.

3. Infections: Viral infections, such as the common cold, can lead to inflammation and peeling of the nasal mucosa. Bacterial infections can also cause similar symptoms, often accompanied by other signs like nasal discharge or fever.

4. Dermatological Conditions: Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can affect the nasal area, leading to peeling skin. These conditions are often chronic and may require specific treatments.

5. Nasal Polyps or Other Growths: While less common, the presence of nasal polyps or other growths can cause irritation and peeling. These are usually benign but may require evaluation by an ENT specialist.

Causes of Oral Bump
The bump you described in the oral cavity could be due to several factors:
1. Mucocele: This is a cyst that forms when a salivary gland becomes blocked. It can appear as a small, painless bump and may resolve on its own.

2. Frictional Keratosis: This occurs due to chronic irritation, such as from biting the inside of your cheek or tongue. It can present as a white patch or bump.

3. Fordyce Spots: These are small, painless bumps that are actually enlarged sebaceous glands. They are harmless and common.

4. Infection or Inflammation: Conditions such as oral herpes or other infections can cause bumps in the mouth, often accompanied by pain or discomfort.

Solutions and Management
1. Moisturization: To combat dryness, consider using a saline nasal spray or a humidifier in your home. This can help keep the nasal passages moist and reduce peeling.

2. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect allergies, try to identify and avoid triggers. Over-the-counter antihistamines may help alleviate symptoms.

3. Gentle Care: Avoid picking at or forcibly removing peeling skin, as this can lead to further irritation or infection. Instead, allow the skin to heal naturally.

4. Oral Hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene to prevent infections. If the bump in your mouth persists or changes, consult a dentist or oral specialist for evaluation.

5. Consult a Specialist: If symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to see an ENT specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies or a biopsy if necessary, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.

6. Topical Treatments: Depending on the diagnosis, topical treatments such as corticosteroids may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and promote healing.

Conclusion
While nasal peeling and bumps can be bothersome, understanding the potential causes can help in managing the symptoms effectively. It is crucial to avoid self-diagnosing and to seek professional medical advice for a tailored treatment plan. Regular follow-ups with healthcare providers can ensure that any underlying conditions are addressed promptly, leading to better overall health and comfort.
