Nasal Peeling and Itching After CO2 Laser Surgery - Otolaryngology

Peeling and itching of the nose?

Hello, I currently have allergic rhinitis.
I previously underwent carbon dioxide laser surgery at an otolaryngology clinic.
After the first procedure, I initially didn't feel any changes, but later I noticed a reduction in my allergy symptoms.
About a year later, I started experiencing allergy symptoms again, around February.
I had occasional issues with nasal peeling and itching, but recently these problems have become more frequent.
After the second surgery, the doctor mentioned that a certain area had become thinner and that I likely wouldn't need further surgery, but I forgot which area he was referring to.
Currently, aside from the nasal peeling and itching, I feel that my sneezing, runny nose, and nasal congestion are manageable, worsening only when I catch a cold.

I would like to ask:
1.
Is there a connection between the nasal peeling and itching and the surgery?
2.
What could be the causes of the nasal peeling and itching? I don't recall having these issues in the past.
3.
What solutions does Western medicine offer for these problems? Is it possible to improve this condition through medication, dietary changes, or surgery?
4.
Are there any specific tests that should be conducted? Thank you.

Hello,
1.
The issue of peeling and itching of the nose is likely unrelated to the surgery.

2.
It is primarily associated with allergic rhinitis or skin allergies.

3.
If symptoms persist, it is recommended to take oral antihistamines or use nasal sprays to alleviate allergy symptoms.

4.
If there is no improvement, you may consider visiting an otolaryngologist or dermatologist for further evaluation.

Wishing you health and safety,

More Info

Hello! Thank you for your detailed inquiry regarding the nasal peeling and itching you are experiencing after undergoing CO2 laser surgery for allergic rhinitis. It's understandable to have concerns about these symptoms, especially after a surgical procedure. Let's address your questions one by one.

1. Is the nasal peeling and itching related to the surgery?
Yes, it is possible that the nasal peeling and itching could be related to the CO2 laser surgery. Laser treatments can cause changes in the nasal mucosa, leading to dryness and irritation. The laser may have altered the structure of the nasal lining, making it more susceptible to environmental irritants or allergens. Additionally, if the surgery resulted in thinner mucosal layers, this could lead to increased sensitivity and a higher likelihood of experiencing symptoms like peeling and itching.

2. What could be the causes of nasal peeling and itching?
There are several potential causes for nasal peeling and itching, including:
- Dryness: Post-surgical changes can lead to decreased moisture in the nasal passages, resulting in dryness and peeling.

- Allergic Reactions: If you have a history of allergic rhinitis, exposure to allergens (like pollen, dust, or pet dander) can trigger symptoms, including itching and peeling.

- Environmental Factors: Changes in weather, humidity, or exposure to irritants (like smoke or strong odors) can exacerbate nasal symptoms.

- Infections: Although less likely, a secondary infection could also cause irritation and peeling.

- Underlying Conditions: Conditions like eczema or seborrheic dermatitis can also affect the nasal area.

3. What are the medical solutions for these issues?
Treatment options for nasal peeling and itching may include:
- Topical Treatments: Saline nasal sprays or moisturizing nasal gels can help keep the nasal passages hydrated. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream may also provide relief for localized itching, but should be used cautiously and not applied inside the nose without medical advice.

- Antihistamines: If allergies are contributing to your symptoms, oral antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids may help reduce inflammation and itching.

- Avoiding Irritants: Identifying and avoiding triggers, such as allergens or irritants, can also be beneficial.

- Dietary Considerations: While there are no specific foods that directly treat nasal peeling, maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins (especially Vitamin A and C) and staying hydrated can support overall mucosal health.

- Further Evaluation: If symptoms persist, a follow-up with your ENT specialist may be necessary to evaluate the nasal passages for any abnormalities or to consider other treatment options.

4. What kind of examinations might be needed?
If your symptoms continue or worsen, your doctor may recommend:
- Nasal Endoscopy: This procedure allows the physician to visualize the nasal passages and sinuses directly, helping to identify any structural issues or signs of inflammation.

- Allergy Testing: If allergies are suspected, skin or blood tests can help determine specific triggers.

- Imaging Studies: In some cases, a CT scan may be warranted to assess the sinuses and nasal anatomy.

In conclusion, while nasal peeling and itching can be concerning, they are not uncommon after procedures like CO2 laser surgery. It is essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and any changes you notice. Keeping a record of your symptoms, potential triggers, and any treatments you have tried can also facilitate more productive discussions during your follow-up appointments. I hope this information helps you understand your situation better and guides you toward effective management of your symptoms. Wishing you a speedy recovery and relief from your nasal discomfort!
