Postoperative bowel issues after hemorrhoid surgery?
I had surgery on Tuesday and was discharged home on Wednesday.
I was able to sit on the toilet and passed some watery stool after passing gas, which I believe is due to the pre-operative laxatives not being fully cleared.
Now it's Friday, and I feel a bit of an urge to have a bowel movement, but after trying to sit on the toilet for about 10 minutes throughout the day, I still have no urge to go, only passing gas.
Should I consider buying a laxative? I've been taking a stool softener in the morning and evening, but it doesn't seem to be effective.

If there is no constipation before the surgery and there is no regular use of stool softeners, there is no need to take additional medication.
Just drink plenty of water and take warm sitz baths to help relieve pain and relax.
Unless there is a strong urge to have a bowel movement that cannot be relieved, it is advisable to return for a follow-up appointment as scheduled and inform the doctor about bowel movements over the past few days.

After undergoing hemorrhoid surgery, it is not uncommon to experience bowel issues, including difficulty in passing stool and changes in bowel consistency. Your situation, where you had surgery on Tuesday and are now experiencing challenges with bowel movements by Friday, is something that many patients face post-operatively.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that after any abdominal or rectal surgery, including hemorrhoidectomy, the bowel can take some time to resume normal function. This is often due to a combination of factors, including the effects of anesthesia, pain medications (which can be constipating), and the physical trauma of surgery itself. The fact that you had some watery stool initially could indicate that your bowel is still adjusting and may not yet be functioning optimally.
Given that you are already taking a stool softener but are still experiencing difficulty, it may be appropriate to consider additional measures. Here are some recommendations:
1. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids. Staying well-hydrated can help soften stool and promote bowel movements. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water a day, unless otherwise directed by your physician.
2. Diet: Focus on a high-fiber diet, which can help promote regular bowel movements. Foods such as fruits (like apples and pears), vegetables, whole grains, and legumes can be beneficial. Avoiding processed foods and those high in fat can also help.
3. Physical Activity: If you are feeling up to it, gentle physical activity, such as walking, can stimulate bowel function. However, be cautious and avoid any strenuous activities that could strain your surgical site.
4. Laxatives: If after a few more days you still find it difficult to have a bowel movement, you may consider using an over-the-counter laxative. However, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new medication, including laxatives. They can recommend the most appropriate type of laxative for your situation, whether it be a stimulant laxative, osmotic laxative, or something else.
5. Follow-Up: If you continue to experience issues with bowel movements, or if you have any concerns about pain, bleeding, or other symptoms, it is crucial to follow up with your surgeon or healthcare provider. They can assess your situation and determine if further intervention is needed.
6. Avoid Straining: It’s essential to avoid straining during bowel movements, as this can lead to complications, especially after hemorrhoid surgery. If you feel the urge to go, try to respond promptly, but do not force it.
In summary, while it is common to experience bowel issues after hemorrhoid surgery, it is important to manage these symptoms carefully. If you do not see improvement in the next few days, or if you have any concerning symptoms, reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice. They can help ensure that your recovery proceeds smoothly and address any complications that may arise.
