Partial Erection Issues After Circumcision: When to Seek Help - Urology

Inability to achieve a full erection?

It has been one month since my surgery, and the stitches have all fallen out.
When I am not erect, everything feels normal, but when I get an erection, there is a tightness and pain around the circumcised area.
Currently, I do not feel any hard lumps when I touch it.
Should I seek medical attention? Before the circumcision, I experienced a ring-like constriction during erections, which I believe is called phimosis.
Thank you, doctor, for taking the time to respond.

Hello: Generally, it will gradually improve, often due to poor elasticity in the wound area.
You may return to the clinic to discuss this with your physician.
Wishing you good health.

After circumcision, it is not uncommon for patients to experience various changes in penile function, including issues related to erections. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing discomfort during partial erections, particularly at the site of the circumcision. This can be concerning, especially if you have a history of conditions like phimosis, which can lead to complications such as paraphimosis (where the foreskin cannot be returned to its normal position) or constriction.

1. Understanding the Symptoms: The sensation of tightness or pain during an erection at the circumcision site may indicate that the skin is healing in a way that causes it to constrict. This can happen if the circumcision was performed too tightly or if there is excessive scarring. The absence of hard lumps is a positive sign, as it suggests that there is no immediate concern for an infection or significant complication.

2. When to Seek Help: If the discomfort persists or worsens, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Pain during erections can affect sexual function and overall quality of life. A healthcare provider can assess the situation, determine if there is any underlying issue, and recommend appropriate treatment. This could include topical treatments, adjustments in sexual practices, or, in some cases, surgical intervention to alleviate the tightness.

3. Potential Complications: Given your history of "constricted" sensations during erections, it is essential to monitor for any signs of complications. If you notice swelling, increased pain, or changes in skin color, these could be signs of a more serious issue that requires immediate attention. Additionally, if you experience any changes in urination or if the pain becomes severe, you should seek help promptly.

4. Post-Operative Care: After circumcision, proper care is crucial for healing. Keeping the area clean and dry, avoiding irritants, and following your surgeon's post-operative instructions can help minimize complications. If you have concerns about the healing process or if you notice any unusual symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider.

5. Long-Term Considerations: It is essential to understand that while some discomfort may be normal during the healing phase, persistent issues should not be ignored. If you find that the pain continues or if you have difficulty achieving full erections, it may be indicative of scarring or other complications that could require further intervention.

In summary, while some discomfort can be expected after circumcision, persistent pain during erections warrants a consultation with a healthcare provider. They can provide a thorough evaluation and determine the best course of action to ensure your recovery is on track and to address any complications that may arise. Your sexual health and comfort are important, and seeking help is a proactive step towards maintaining both.
