Genital burning sensation
Hello, doctor.
My current symptoms are burning in the genital area and frequent urination.
Most doctors I consulted believe it is prostatitis.
I have had a prostate fluid test, which showed no inflammation.
Another doctor suggested pelvic inflammatory disease.
However, I am wondering if it could be urethritis.
How do doctors make a diagnosis? Currently, I am taking Colobid and Erythromycin enteric-coated tablets.
Do these two medications have any effect on prostatitis or urethritis? Thank you.

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology
Colabital is generally very effective for inflammation of the prostate or urethra.
Since you have already seen a urologist, you should follow up for a return visit and discuss it further with your doctor.

Understanding genital burning can be quite complex, as it can stem from various causes, including infections, inflammation, and other medical conditions. Based on your symptoms of burning sensation in the genital area and frequent urination, it is essential to consider several potential diagnoses.
1. Prostatitis: This is an inflammation of the prostate gland, which can cause symptoms like burning during urination, pelvic pain, and frequent urination. Your mention of prostatitis was noted, and it's good that you had a prostate fluid analysis that ruled out inflammation. However, prostatitis can sometimes be chronic and may not always show signs in lab tests.
2. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): This condition typically affects women but can also occur in men. It involves inflammation of the reproductive organs and can cause pain, burning sensations, and urinary symptoms. If a doctor suspects PID, they may perform a pelvic exam and possibly imaging studies to confirm the diagnosis.
3. Urethritis: This is an inflammation of the urethra, often caused by infections (bacterial or viral). Symptoms include burning during urination and increased frequency of urination. Testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is often part of the diagnostic process.
4. Cystitis: This refers to inflammation of the bladder, commonly due to a urinary tract infection (UTI). Symptoms include burning during urination, frequent urination, and sometimes lower abdominal pain.
5. Other Causes: Allergies to soaps, lotions, or other products can also cause burning sensations. Additionally, skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis in the genital area can lead to discomfort.
Regarding the medications you are currently taking, Colobid (可樂必妥) is often used for its anti-inflammatory properties and may help alleviate symptoms associated with prostatitis or urinary tract issues. Yiyuan Sugar-coated Tablets (抑炎源糖衣錠) are typically used for their anti-inflammatory effects as well. While both medications can help manage inflammation, their effectiveness will depend on the underlying cause of your symptoms.
To determine the exact cause of your symptoms, a healthcare provider may conduct a thorough history and physical examination, including:
- Urinalysis: To check for signs of infection or other abnormalities.
- Culture Tests: To identify any bacterial infections.
- Imaging Studies: Such as an ultrasound, if necessary, to visualize the pelvic organs.
- Further Blood Tests: To rule out systemic infections or other conditions.
If your symptoms persist despite treatment, or if you experience worsening pain, fever, or other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may refer you to a urologist or a specialist in pelvic health for further evaluation.
In summary, understanding the cause of genital burning requires a comprehensive approach, including a detailed medical history, physical examination, and appropriate diagnostic tests. The medications you are taking may help with inflammation, but it is essential to ensure they are appropriate for your specific condition. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized medical advice and treatment options.
