Please ask your questions regarding pregnancy preparation?

Hello, Doctor.
I am currently 38 years old and unmarried.
I am concerned that getting pregnant at an older age may be difficult.
I have heard that Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) can improve physical condition, and I would like to know if I can start supplementing with CoQ10 now.
However, I have also seen references to a type of Q10; which one is effective for fertility? I have hepatitis B and am currently on regular medication and follow-up visits.
Should it be relatively safe for me to take fertility supplements? I have quite a few questions; thank you for taking the time to answer.

Niming, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/05/21

Preparing for pregnancy at the age of 38 can indeed raise concerns about fertility and the health of both the mother and the baby. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a compound that plays a crucial role in energy production within cells and has been studied for its potential benefits in reproductive health, particularly in women of advanced maternal age.

Research suggests that CoQ10 may improve ovarian function and egg quality, which can be particularly beneficial for women over 35. As women age, the natural levels of CoQ10 in the body decline, which may contribute to decreased fertility. Supplementing with CoQ10 could potentially help counteract this decline and improve the chances of conception.
When considering CoQ10 supplements, it is essential to choose the right form. There are two primary forms of CoQ10: ubiquinone and ubiquinol. Ubiquinone is the oxidized form, while ubiquinol is the reduced form. Ubiquinol is often considered more bioavailable, meaning it may be more easily absorbed and utilized by the body. For women preparing for pregnancy, ubiquinol may be the preferred choice, but both forms can be beneficial.

Regarding your concern about having hepatitis B (B肝), it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplements, including CoQ10. While CoQ10 is generally considered safe, individual health conditions can influence how your body responds to supplements. Your doctor can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current treatment plan.

In addition to CoQ10, it is also essential to focus on a well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals that support reproductive health. Nutrients such as folic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants can play a significant role in preparing your body for pregnancy. Folic acid is particularly important as it helps prevent neural tube defects in the developing fetus.

Moreover, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial when preparing for pregnancy. This includes regular exercise, managing stress, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and ensuring you are at a healthy weight. All of these factors can contribute to improved fertility and a healthier pregnancy.

If you are considering starting CoQ10 supplements, it is advisable to begin with a lower dose and monitor how your body responds. Typical dosages range from 100 mg to 300 mg per day, but your healthcare provider can recommend the best dosage for your specific situation.

In summary, CoQ10 supplements may offer potential benefits for women preparing for pregnancy, especially at the age of 38. However, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider, particularly due to your hepatitis B condition, to ensure that any supplements you take are safe and appropriate for your health. Additionally, focusing on a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle will further enhance your chances of a successful pregnancy.
