Menopausal menstrual issues?
Hello, doctor.
I am 51 years old and have been taking "Vinina" for sleep issues related to menopause for about 10 months.
Recently, in the past two months, my menstrual cycle has become very irregular, occurring 3 to 4 times a month, each lasting about 5 days, with a gap of 2 to 3 days in between.
The flow is minimal, except for one instance where it was somewhat normal.
I have uterine fibroids.
Is this irregularity in my menstrual cycle related to menopause?

Menstrual irregularities during menopause are a common concern for many women, particularly those around the age of 51, as you mentioned. The transition into menopause, known as perimenopause, can bring about a variety of changes in menstrual cycles, including frequency, duration, and flow. Your experience of having your period multiple times in a month, with varying flow, is not unusual during this transitional phase.
During perimenopause, hormonal fluctuations are the primary cause of menstrual irregularities. The ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and progesterone, leading to changes in the menstrual cycle. Some women may experience heavier periods, while others may have lighter or more frequent bleeding. The presence of uterine fibroids, as you mentioned, can also contribute to changes in menstrual patterns. Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can cause heavier bleeding or prolonged periods, but they can also lead to irregularities, especially as hormone levels fluctuate.
Given that you have been taking "Vinina" (likely a hormone replacement therapy) for sleep issues related to menopause, it’s important to consider how this medication may interact with your menstrual cycle. Hormone replacement therapy can sometimes stabilize menstrual cycles, but it can also lead to irregular bleeding, particularly in the initial months of treatment.
It’s crucial to monitor your symptoms and discuss them with your healthcare provider, especially since you are experiencing significant changes in your menstrual cycle. They may recommend further evaluation, such as an ultrasound, to assess the size and impact of the fibroids on your menstrual irregularities. In some cases, additional treatments may be necessary to manage symptoms effectively.
In terms of lifestyle adjustments, maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and managing stress can help alleviate some symptoms associated with menopause. Additionally, keeping a menstrual diary can be beneficial for tracking your cycles, symptoms, and any other changes you notice. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider in determining the best course of action for your situation.
If your menstrual irregularities become more severe, or if you experience any concerning symptoms such as heavy bleeding, severe pain, or other unusual changes, it’s essential to seek medical advice promptly. Your healthcare provider can help determine if these changes are a normal part of the menopausal transition or if they require further investigation or treatment.
In summary, while menstrual irregularities during menopause are common and can be influenced by factors such as hormonal changes and the presence of fibroids, it is essential to stay in communication with your healthcare provider to ensure that your symptoms are managed appropriately and to rule out any other potential issues.
