Side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine?
Hello doctor, I received my third dose of the BNT vaccine two days ago.
Initially, I didn't experience any side effects, but about 24 hours after the vaccination, my temperature slightly increased to 37 degrees Celsius, and I noticeably felt my heart racing.
Last night while sleeping, my heart rate ranged between 75 and 95 beats per minute, but I did not experience any shortness of breath or chest pain.
I would like to ask if this could be myocarditis caused by the vaccine? Under what circumstances should I go to the hospital for an examination? Thank you.

If there is persistent and worsening chest discomfort along with difficulty breathing, then myocarditis should be considered as a possibility.

After receiving the BNT vaccine, it's not uncommon for individuals to experience a range of side effects, including changes in heart rate. In your case, experiencing a slightly elevated body temperature and an increased heart rate (75-95 bpm) within 24 hours post-vaccination can be attributed to the body's immune response to the vaccine. This response is generally mild and temporary, as the vaccine works to stimulate the immune system to recognize and fight the virus that causes COVID-19.
While myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) has been reported as a rare side effect associated with mRNA vaccines like BNT, it typically occurs within a few days after the second dose, particularly in younger males. The symptoms of myocarditis can include chest pain, shortness of breath, and feelings of having a fast-beating, fluttering, or pounding heart. Since you mentioned that you do not have symptoms such as chest pain or difficulty breathing, it is less likely that your symptoms are indicative of myocarditis.
The slight fever you are experiencing (37 degrees Celsius) is also a common reaction to vaccinations, as it indicates that your immune system is responding. Increased heart rate can occur due to various factors, including anxiety, physical activity, or even fever itself. It is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If your heart rate remains elevated, or if you develop additional symptoms such as chest pain, severe shortness of breath, or fainting, you should seek medical attention promptly.
In general, if you experience any of the following symptoms after vaccination, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional:
1. Persistent or worsening chest pain.
2. Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
3. A heart rate that is consistently above 100 bpm at rest or any significant irregularities in your heartbeat.
4. Dizziness or fainting spells.
For most individuals, the side effects of the vaccine are mild and resolve within a few days. It is crucial to stay hydrated, rest, and allow your body to recover. If you have any underlying health conditions or concerns about your heart health, it may be beneficial to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In conclusion, while your symptoms could be related to the vaccine, they do not necessarily indicate myocarditis, especially in the absence of more severe symptoms. However, it is always best to err on the side of caution and consult with a healthcare professional if you have concerns about your health following vaccination.
