Probability of Pregnancy
Hello, doctor: A few days ago, while my girlfriend was sleeping (and I confirmed she was not awake), I touched her genital area and noticed that her vagina was filled with a milky white discharge.
Is this normal vaginal fluid or arousal fluid? I also have a clear discharge from my glans (prostatic fluid?), so before touching her, I washed my hands and went to the bathroom.
However, after washing my hands, I don't remember if I touched my glans again.
I am certain that my hands did not feel slippery before I touched her, and if I did touch it, it should have been very little, and at most, I only touched the area where the skin color changes to pink, without touching the labia minora.
Additionally, the milky white discharge was only present in the vagina and did not flow out.
Could this lead to pregnancy (my girlfriend has irregular periods)? If so, what is the likelihood?
zero, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/06/10

When considering the chances of pregnancy based on the scenario you described, it is important to understand the nature of vaginal discharge and the conditions under which pregnancy can occur. The white discharge you observed in your girlfriend's vagina could be a normal physiological discharge, which is common and can vary throughout the menstrual cycle. This discharge is typically a sign of hormonal changes and is not necessarily indicative of ovulation or fertility.
In terms of the risk of pregnancy, it is crucial to note that pregnancy can only occur if sperm comes into contact with the vaginal canal, cervix, or uterus during the fertile window of the menstrual cycle. The fertile window generally spans from about five days before ovulation to the day of ovulation itself. If your girlfriend was not ovulating at the time of your interaction, the chances of pregnancy would be significantly reduced.
Regarding the transparent discharge you mentioned from your glans, this is likely pre-ejaculatory fluid (pre-cum), which can contain sperm. However, the amount of sperm in pre-ejaculatory fluid is typically lower than in ejaculate. If you did not have direct contact with your glans after washing your hands, the risk of transferring sperm to your girlfriend is minimal, especially if you only touched the area around the vulva without direct contact with the vaginal opening.
Given that your girlfriend has irregular periods, it may be challenging to determine her ovulation cycle accurately. Irregular cycles can lead to uncertainty about when she is fertile, which complicates the assessment of pregnancy risk. If she is experiencing significant changes in her menstrual cycle, it may be beneficial for her to consult a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while there is a theoretical risk of pregnancy whenever there is potential for sperm to enter the vaginal canal, the specific circumstances you described suggest that the likelihood is quite low. If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, it would be prudent for your girlfriend to take a home pregnancy test if her period is late or to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
To further understand the implications of vaginal discharge and its relation to fertility, it is helpful to note that normal vaginal discharge can vary in consistency and color throughout the menstrual cycle. For example, around ovulation, discharge may become clear and stretchy, resembling egg whites, which indicates high fertility. In contrast, during other phases of the cycle, discharge may be thicker or more opaque.
If you or your girlfriend have ongoing concerns about fertility, menstrual irregularities, or sexual health, seeking advice from a healthcare professional is always a good step. They can provide personalized guidance and support based on individual health needs and circumstances.
