Numbness and pain in the lower right scapula?

The symptoms are located near the far right side and persist even after receiving treatment at a martial arts clinic.
The numbness is not constant; it was only occasionally present during work a couple of days ago, but today it occurs several times whenever I use my right hand.
Sometimes it feels very numb, similar to a cramp, gradually intensifying and lasting one to two minutes before slowly diminishing.
At times, it extends to my arm, and my fingers on both hands also experience slight numbness.
I am unsure what this could be.
I also have ongoing issues with shoulder and neck pain, and I wonder if there is a connection.
If I need to seek medical attention, which specialty should I consult?

More Info

Understanding right shoulder blade pain and numbness can be quite complex, especially when it is accompanied by symptoms such as tingling or numbness that radiates down the arm. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a combination of shoulder pain and neurological symptoms, which could be indicative of several underlying issues.

Possible Causes
1. Nerve Compression or Irritation: One of the most common causes of shoulder blade pain and numbness in the arm is nerve compression. This can occur due to a herniated disc in the cervical spine, which can put pressure on the nerves that innervate the shoulder and arm. Conditions like cervical radiculopathy can lead to symptoms that include pain, numbness, and tingling in the shoulder and down the arm.

2. Rotator Cuff Injury: Given your history of shoulder pain and potential rotator cuff issues, it is possible that a tear or inflammation in the rotator cuff could be contributing to your symptoms. Rotator cuff injuries can lead to pain and weakness in the shoulder, and in some cases, they can also affect the nerves around the shoulder joint.

3. Muscle Strain: Chronic shoulder and neck pain can often be attributed to muscle strain or tension. Poor posture, especially if you spend long hours at a desk or in front of a computer, can lead to muscle tightness in the neck and shoulders, which may contribute to pain and numbness.

4. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: This condition occurs when the blood vessels or nerves in the space between your collarbone and your first rib are compressed. Symptoms can include pain in the shoulders and neck, numbness in the fingers, and weakness in the hand.

Suggested Solutions
1. Physical Therapy: Engaging in physical therapy can be highly beneficial. A physical therapist can help you with exercises that strengthen the shoulder muscles, improve flexibility, and correct posture. They may also employ techniques such as manual therapy to relieve pain and improve function.

2. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation. In some cases, your doctor may recommend corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation in the shoulder area.

3. Ergonomic Adjustments: If your symptoms are exacerbated by your work environment, consider making ergonomic adjustments. Ensure that your workstation is set up to promote good posture, and take regular breaks to stretch and move around.

4. Heat and Cold Therapy: Applying heat can help relax and loosen tissues and stimulate blood flow to the area, while cold therapy can reduce inflammation and numb sharp pain. Alternating between heat and cold can be effective.

5. Consultation with a Specialist: Given your symptoms, it would be advisable to consult with an orthopedic specialist or a neurologist. An orthopedic doctor can evaluate your shoulder for any structural issues, while a neurologist can assess for any nerve-related problems.

When to Seek Immediate Care
If you experience severe pain, sudden weakness in your arm, or loss of coordination, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of a more serious condition that requires prompt treatment.

In summary, your symptoms of right shoulder blade pain and numbness could be due to a variety of causes, including nerve compression, rotator cuff injuries, muscle strain, or thoracic outlet syndrome. A comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare professional is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan. Engaging in physical therapy, managing pain, and making ergonomic adjustments can significantly improve your condition.
