How to overcome addiction to masturbation?

Hello doctor, I have been frequently masturbating since I was in the fifth grade, originally about once every two to three days.
However, during middle school and now in high school, I am almost doing it every day, sometimes up to 12 times a day.
I find this very troubling; every time I ejaculate, it stains my sheets, and I have to buy condoms myself.
I really want to quit masturbation.
I've been doing this from the age of 12 to almost 17, nearly five years.
Will this affect my physical development and height? I am currently 173 cm tall, and I am really worried.

Overcoming masturbation addiction is a common concern for many individuals, especially during adolescence when sexual urges and curiosity are heightened. It’s important to understand that masturbation is a normal and natural behavior, but when it becomes compulsive or interferes with daily life, relationships, or personal well-being, it can be classified as an addiction.

Health Impacts of Excessive Masturbation
1. Physical Effects: While masturbation itself is generally considered safe, excessive frequency can lead to physical discomfort, such as soreness or irritation of the genital area. In your case, the need to use condoms to manage ejaculation indicates a level of concern about hygiene and cleanliness, which is understandable. However, it’s crucial to note that excessive masturbation does not have a direct impact on your physical development, including height. Your height is primarily determined by genetics and overall health during your growth years.

2. Psychological Effects: Compulsive masturbation can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, or anxiety, especially if it conflicts with personal beliefs or societal norms. This can create a cycle of negative emotions that may further drive the behavior. Additionally, it can interfere with social interactions and relationships, as excessive focus on masturbation may lead to social withdrawal or avoidance of intimate relationships.

3. Impact on Daily Life: If masturbation is taking up a significant portion of your time and affecting your responsibilities, studies, or social life, it may be time to consider strategies for moderation or cessation.

Solutions for Overcoming Masturbation Addiction
1. Self-Reflection: Understanding the triggers that lead to excessive masturbation is crucial. Is it boredom, stress, or loneliness? Identifying these triggers can help you develop healthier coping mechanisms.

2. Set Goals: Gradually reduce the frequency of masturbation. Instead of aiming for complete cessation immediately, set realistic goals, such as reducing the number of times per week. This approach can make the process feel less daunting.

3. Engage in Alternative Activities: Find hobbies or activities that occupy your time and mind. Physical exercise, sports, or creative outlets like art or music can be effective distractions and can also improve your mood and overall well-being.

4. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga can help manage stress and reduce the urge to engage in compulsive behaviors. These techniques promote relaxation and can help you become more aware of your thoughts and impulses.

5. Seek Professional Help: If you find it challenging to manage this on your own, consider speaking with a mental health professional. Therapists can provide support and strategies tailored to your specific situation. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is particularly effective in addressing compulsive behaviors.

6. Limit Access to Triggers: If certain materials (like pornography) or situations lead to urges, consider limiting your exposure to them. This may involve using internet filters or avoiding specific environments that trigger the behavior.

7. Build a Support System: Talk to trusted friends or family members about your struggles. Having a support system can provide encouragement and accountability as you work towards your goals.

Conclusion
It’s commendable that you recognize the impact of your behavior and are seeking to make a change. Remember that moderation is key, and it’s okay to seek help. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing this concern can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. If you have further questions or need additional support, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional.
