Gonorrhea issues

Dear Doctor,
I had unprotected oral sex and protected vaginal intercourse on June 19.
I would like to ask whether the burning sensation associated with gonorrhea is typically felt all the time or only during urination.
Over the past few days, I've noticed that my urine feels somewhat warm, but I don't usually experience pain.
The only time I feel a slight stinging sensation is after masturbation, but the urethral opening does not appear red or swollen, and I do not have the yellow-green discharge that is often mentioned online.
Could you please advise if it is possible that I have a mild gonorrhea infection? Thank you.

zdd, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/06/26

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: Abnormalities in the urethra do not necessarily indicate gonorrhea; a common urinary tract infection is also a possibility.
It is recommended to perform a urinalysis for further evaluation.
Wishing you good health.

Gonorrhea, caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can affect both men and women. Understanding its symptoms is crucial for early detection and treatment. The symptoms of gonorrhea can vary significantly between individuals, and some may experience mild or even no symptoms at all, which can lead to complications if left untreated.

In men, the most common symptoms include a burning sensation during urination, which is often described as a "burning" or "stinging" feeling. This symptom typically occurs when urinating and may also be accompanied by a frequent urge to urinate. Additionally, men may notice a discharge from the penis, which can be yellow, green, or white in color. In some cases, the infection can also lead to pain or swelling in the testicles.

In your case, you mentioned experiencing a "hot" sensation while urinating, which could be indicative of a urinary tract issue or an STI. However, the absence of significant pain, discharge, or visible inflammation at the urethral opening does not rule out the possibility of a mild gonorrhea infection. It is important to note that some individuals may have a less severe presentation of symptoms, which can lead to a delayed diagnosis.

The symptoms of gonorrhea can also manifest in other areas of the body, depending on the type of sexual contact. For example, oral gonorrhea can occur from oral sex, leading to a sore throat, while anal gonorrhea can cause rectal pain, discharge, or bleeding. Since you mentioned engaging in oral sex without protection, it is essential to consider the possibility of oral gonorrhea as well.

Given your recent sexual encounter and the symptoms you are experiencing, it is advisable to seek medical attention for testing. A healthcare provider can perform a urinalysis or swab test to determine if you have gonorrhea or another STI. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent complications, such as pelvic inflammatory disease in women or epididymitis in men, which can lead to infertility if left untreated.

In summary, while the symptoms you describe may not be typical of a severe gonorrhea infection, there is still a possibility of a mild infection. The best course of action is to consult with a healthcare professional for appropriate testing and treatment. Remember that practicing safe sex, including the use of condoms, is essential in reducing the risk of STIs. If you have any further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to a medical professional for guidance.
