Genital issues
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about a concern I've had since childhood.
I have noticed that one side of my labia minora is present while the other side is absent.
Is this a normal phenomenon? Additionally, I have recently discovered that on the side where there is no labia minora, there is a rough, flesh-colored area inside that feels similar in size to the labia minora but is thicker.
It only itches when I touch it, and generally, it doesn't cause any discomfort.
I found it strange, so I took a picture, and it appears to be a flesh-colored mass with a pitted texture.
I would like to know what this issue might be (this has not just occurred recently; it has been happening for some time).
Thank you.

When it comes to understanding asymmetry and unusual growths in the labia, it's essential to approach the topic with both medical knowledge and sensitivity. The labia, which are part of the external female genitalia, can exhibit a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, and it is not uncommon for women to notice asymmetries between the left and right sides.
Firstly, it is important to note that anatomical asymmetry is a normal occurrence in many parts of the human body, including the labia. Many women have labia that are not perfectly symmetrical, and this can be due to genetic factors, hormonal influences, or even the natural development of the body over time. If you have noticed that one side of your labia is larger or shaped differently than the other, this is generally considered normal, especially if there are no accompanying symptoms such as pain, itching, or unusual discharge.
Regarding the rough, thickened area you described that feels different from the surrounding tissue, it is crucial to monitor any changes in texture, color, or sensation. The presence of a lump or thickened area can be due to various benign conditions, such as:
1. Sebaceous Cysts: These are small, non-cancerous lumps that can occur in the skin, including the genital area. They are typically painless and may feel firm or rubbery.
2. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles that can occur in the genital area, often resulting in small, red bumps or lumps that may be itchy or tender.
3. Skin Tags: These are small, benign growths that can appear on the skin and may be flesh-colored or slightly darker. They are usually harmless but can be removed if they cause discomfort.
4. Lichen Simplex Chronicus: This is a condition characterized by thickened skin due to chronic scratching or irritation. It can lead to changes in texture and color.
5. Vulvar Varicosities: These are swollen veins that can occur in the vulvar area, often during pregnancy or due to increased pressure in the pelvic region.
If the area you are concerned about has been present for a while and is accompanied by itching or discomfort, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination and, if necessary, conduct further tests to determine the nature of the growth. It is essential to rule out any potential infections or other conditions that may require treatment.
In summary, while asymmetry in the labia is generally normal, any new or unusual growths should be evaluated by a medical professional. Regular self-examinations and being aware of changes in your body are important for maintaining reproductive health. If you have any concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your gynecologist or a healthcare provider who specializes in women's health. They can provide personalized advice and reassurance based on your specific situation.
