Pain at the lower edge of the left rib cage?

Hello doctor, I would like to ask about my left rib, which is more protruded than my right rib.
When I touch the lower edge, there is something that can move, and sometimes the lower edge of my left rib hurts when I bend over completely.
I have already seen a gastroenterologist and had both an upper endoscopy and a colonoscopy, but the doctor said everything was fine.
Would it be appropriate to see an orthopedic specialist? What could be causing this? Additionally, can an orthopedic doctor treat the protrusion of my left rib compared to my right rib? Thank you for your help.

A, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/07/03

Hello, asymmetry between the ribs is a common condition.
It is advised not to repeatedly stimulate or press on painful areas, as this may exacerbate inflammation.
Generally, conservative treatment is recommended, which includes stretching, flexibility exercises, aerobic activities, and heat therapy to increase local adaptability.
Individuals who are less active are more likely to feel discomfort due to minor bodily issues, so increasing physical activity to strengthen fitness can help improve the situation.
Surgery or advanced examinations should only be considered if conservative treatments are ineffective.

When it comes to left rib pain and protrusion, it is essential to consider a variety of potential causes and the appropriate specialists to consult. Based on your description, it seems you have already undergone evaluations by a gastroenterologist, including endoscopies, which ruled out gastrointestinal issues. This is a good first step, as rib pain can sometimes be mistaken for gastrointestinal problems.

The protrusion of the left rib compared to the right could be due to several factors. One possibility is a structural issue, such as a rib deformity or a condition known as pectus excavatum or pectus carinatum, which can cause asymmetry in the rib cage. Another potential cause could be muscular or soft tissue-related, such as a strain or injury to the intercostal muscles, which are located between the ribs and can cause pain and discomfort when moving or bending.

The "sliding" sensation you describe could indicate a subluxation or dislocation of a rib, which can occur due to trauma or repetitive strain. This condition may lead to pain, especially when bending or twisting the torso. Additionally, conditions like costochondritis, which is inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum, can also result in localized pain and tenderness.

Given your symptoms, it would be appropriate to consult an orthopedist, particularly one who specializes in musculoskeletal disorders. An orthopedist can perform a thorough physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as X-rays or a CT scan, to assess the structure of your ribs and surrounding tissues. These imaging studies can help identify any abnormalities, fractures, or other issues that may be contributing to your symptoms.

In terms of treatment, if the issue is determined to be muscular or related to rib alignment, the orthopedist may suggest physical therapy to strengthen the surrounding muscles and improve flexibility. In some cases, they may recommend specific exercises or stretches to alleviate pain and improve function. If a structural issue is identified, the treatment plan may vary significantly, ranging from conservative management to surgical intervention, depending on the severity and nature of the condition.

It is also worth noting that rib pain can sometimes be referred from other areas, such as the spine or even the heart, so a comprehensive evaluation is crucial. If you experience any additional symptoms, such as shortness of breath, chest pain, or significant changes in your overall health, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention.

In summary, your next step should be to consult an orthopedist who can evaluate your left rib protrusion and pain. They will be able to determine the underlying cause and recommend an appropriate treatment plan tailored to your specific condition. Remember to communicate all your symptoms clearly and any previous evaluations you have undergone to ensure a thorough assessment.

Coccydynia is not related to scoliosis but is associated with sitting posture (slouching is the most likely to trigger it). Using a posture-correcting seat cushion can help improve the condition.
