Is the chance of getting pregnant high?
Hello Doctor: My girlfriend and I had sexual intercourse on the eighth day of her menstrual cycle (seven days before ovulation).
We tried using a larger condom, and afterward, I noticed white discharge at the base of my penis.
My girlfriend is worried about the possibility of pregnancy, but upon checking, the condom did not break, and the semen was still at the tip (although I'm unsure if any could have leaked from the back).
What are the chances of pregnancy in this situation? If we are concerned, when would be the best time to take a pregnancy test? Thank you, Doctor.

Hello, the failure rate of correctly using condoms throughout is still about 5%.
It is recommended that if your period is one week late, you should take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

When it comes to understanding the chances of pregnancy after unprotected intercourse, especially during a specific time in the menstrual cycle, it's essential to consider several factors. In your case, you mentioned that the intercourse occurred on the eighth day of the menstrual cycle, which is typically around the time leading up to ovulation. This timing is crucial because the likelihood of conception is highest during the ovulation period, which usually occurs about 14 days before the next menstrual period begins.
Firstly, let's address the concern regarding the white discharge you observed at the base of the penis after intercourse. This could be a result of several factors, including residual semen or pre-ejaculate fluid. Pre-ejaculate can contain sperm, albeit in smaller quantities than ejaculate. If the condom was intact and there was no visible breakage, the chances of pregnancy are significantly reduced. However, it is still possible for sperm to escape if there was any slippage or if the condom was not fitted correctly.
Regarding the timing of ovulation, sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days. Therefore, if ovulation occurs shortly after your intercourse, there is still a possibility of pregnancy. Given that you had intercourse on the eighth day of your cycle, if your cycle is regular and typically lasts around 28 days, ovulation might occur around day 14. This means that sperm could potentially fertilize an egg if ovulation occurs soon after the intercourse.
If you and your girlfriend are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, it is advisable to take a home pregnancy test. Most home pregnancy tests are reliable and can detect pregnancy about a week after a missed period. If your girlfriend's cycle is regular, you can wait until the expected date of her next period to take the test for the most accurate result. If her cycle is irregular, it might be best to wait at least two weeks after the intercourse to ensure that the test can accurately detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy.
In summary, while the chances of pregnancy from the scenario you described are relatively low, they are not zero, especially considering the timing in relation to ovulation. If there are any further concerns or if your girlfriend experiences any unusual symptoms, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider for personalized advice and potential further testing. Remember, using condoms correctly and consistently is one of the best ways to prevent unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.
