Numbness and even weakness in the limbs?
Recently, I started experiencing numbness in both hands that lasted all day.
The next day, the numbness in my hands persisted and spread to my legs, along with stiffness and numbness in my right shoulder and neck.
On the third day, the numbness continued.
That evening, I consulted a doctor I had seen a month ago for a confirmed diagnosis, asking whether I should see a specialist for potential sequelae.
The doctor suggested it might be due to poor posture and prescribed muscle relaxants for me to try.
After taking them for two days, I felt my shoulder and neck were less stiff, but there was only slight improvement.
By the fifth day, the numbness in my hands and feet had resolved, but I still felt that the sensation in my extremities was different from before.
My hands and feet felt weak, with normal temperature sensation, but pressure sensation felt unusual.
Additionally, I noticed a significant loss of sensation in the soles of my feet.
I would like to know what this could potentially indicate or which specialist I should consult.
Thank you.

Hello, Miss:
You mentioned that you have a noticeable loss of sensation in the soles of your feet, which may indicate a potential issue with nerve compression.
This can occur due to prolonged fixed positions, repetitive movements over time, or excessive training, including situations such as prolonged sitting, standing, or exercising.
If nerve compression leads to peripheral neuropathy, the following characteristics may be present:
1.
Pain that is described as burning or tingling.
2.
Symptoms that have a specific band-like distribution, which can be triggered by touch or pressure.
3.
Accompanied by muscle soreness and weakness.
Peripheral nerve examinations typically utilize electrophysiological tests to assist in diagnosis.
Nerve conduction studies assess the transmission speed and waveform of large fiber nerves.
Electromyography (EMG) evaluates the muscle response in the areas supplied by the affected nerves.
Additionally, some metabolic disorders, such as hyperthyroidism or electrolyte imbalances, may need to be considered.
I recommend that you visit a neurology clinic for further examination and follow-up.
Thank you for your inquiry, and feel free to discuss any related questions!
Wishing you good health and peace,
Dr.

Numbness and weakness in the limbs can be concerning symptoms, and understanding their potential causes is crucial for effective management. Based on your description, it seems that you initially experienced persistent numbness in your hands, which later extended to your legs and right shoulder. This progression, along with the sensation of weakness, can be indicative of several underlying issues.
One common cause of numbness and weakness in the limbs is nerve compression or irritation. This can occur due to poor posture, which you mentioned your doctor suggested. For instance, prolonged periods of sitting or standing in awkward positions can lead to compression of nerves, particularly in the neck and back, resulting in symptoms like numbness and weakness in the arms and legs. Conditions such as cervical radiculopathy, where a nerve in the neck is compressed, can lead to symptoms radiating down the arms.
Another possibility is peripheral neuropathy, which can be caused by various factors, including diabetes, vitamin deficiencies (such as B12), or even certain medications. This condition affects the peripheral nerves and can lead to numbness, tingling, and weakness in the limbs. Given that you mentioned your symptoms improved slightly with muscle relaxants, it suggests that muscle tension may be contributing to your discomfort, but it does not rule out other underlying conditions.
Your description of feeling a "weird" sensation when applying pressure and a loss of sensation in the soles of your feet could indicate that the nerves are not functioning optimally. This could be due to nerve damage or irritation, which may require further evaluation.
Given the complexity of your symptoms, it would be advisable to consult a neurologist. A neurologist specializes in conditions affecting the nervous system and can perform a thorough examination, including nerve conduction studies or electromyography (EMG), to assess the function of your nerves and muscles. They can help determine if there is any nerve damage or other neurological issues contributing to your symptoms.
Additionally, physical therapy may be beneficial. A physical therapist can work with you to improve your posture, strengthen the muscles around your neck and back, and provide exercises to enhance your overall mobility and reduce the risk of nerve compression.
In summary, while your symptoms may initially seem related to posture and muscle tension, they could also be indicative of nerve involvement. Consulting with a neurologist and possibly engaging in physical therapy would be prudent steps to take. It’s essential to address these symptoms early to prevent any potential progression or complications. Remember to keep track of any changes in your symptoms and communicate them to your healthcare provider for the best possible care.
