Genital issues
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask about a concern I have had since childhood.
I have noticed that one side of my labia minora is absent while the other side is present.
Is this a normal phenomenon? Additionally, I have recently discovered that on the side where the labia minora is absent, there is a rough, flesh-colored area inside that feels similar in size to the labia minora but is thicker.
It only itches when I touch it, and generally, it doesn't cause any discomfort.
I find it strange, so I took a picture, and it appears to be a flesh-colored mass with a somewhat pitted surface.
I would like to know what this issue might be (this has not just recently occurred; it has been present for some time).
Thank you.

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, based on your symptom description, it is difficult to determine if it is normal.
I recommend that if you do not have any discomfort, you can observe for another one to two years.
If issues persist, please consult a gynecologist for further evaluation.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Chang.

When it comes to understanding asymmetry and unusual growths in the labia, it is essential to approach the topic with a combination of medical knowledge and sensitivity to the concerns of the individual. The labia, which are part of the vulva, can exhibit a range of normal variations in size, shape, and color. It is not uncommon for women to notice asymmetry between the labia minora (the inner lips) or labia majora (the outer lips). This can be completely normal and is often a result of natural anatomical differences.
In your case, you mentioned that one side of your labia minora appears to be different from the other, and you have also noticed a thickened area that feels rough and is flesh-colored. It is important to understand that variations in the labia can occur for many reasons, including hormonal changes, natural anatomical differences, or even benign conditions such as cysts or skin tags.
The rough area you described could potentially be a benign growth, such as a sebaceous cyst, which is a common occurrence in the genital area. These cysts can develop when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. They are usually harmless and may not require treatment unless they become painful or infected. However, the presence of itching, especially when you touch the area, could indicate irritation or inflammation, which may warrant further investigation.
It is also important to consider other possibilities, such as a benign condition known as labial hypertrophy, where one side of the labia is larger than the other. This condition can be completely normal and does not typically require treatment unless it causes discomfort or self-consciousness.
However, any new growth or change in the genital area should be evaluated by a healthcare professional, especially if it has been present for a while or if you have concerns about its appearance or associated symptoms like itching. A gynecologist can perform a thorough examination to determine the nature of the growth and rule out any potential issues, such as infections or other dermatological conditions.
In summary, while asymmetry in the labia is often normal, any unusual growths or changes should be assessed by a medical professional. It is crucial to prioritize your health and well-being by seeking advice from a qualified healthcare provider who can offer personalized guidance based on your specific situation. Regular gynecological check-ups are also recommended to monitor any changes in your reproductive health. Remember, your body is unique, and understanding its variations is an important part of maintaining your overall health.
