Heart sounds
Hello, doctor.
I contracted COVID-19 in early May.
During the illness, I noticed that when lying flat, I could easily hear my heartbeat.
After taking traditional Chinese medicine to help my recovery, the sensation became less pronounced.
However, in the past few days, I've not only felt the heartbeat near my heart but also noticed it clearly in the area below my throat and above my collarbone, as well as in my abdomen.
This has persisted for three days, and I have no other physical discomfort.
Doctor, do you think I need to undergo further examination for this condition?

Experiencing unusual heartbeat sounds or sensations after recovering from COVID-19 can be concerning, and it's important to understand the context and potential implications of these symptoms. Given your description of hearing your heartbeat in various areas of your body, including the throat, collarbone, and abdomen, it is understandable to seek further clarification on whether you should pursue additional medical evaluation.
Firstly, it is worth noting that COVID-19 can have various effects on the cardiovascular system. Some individuals report symptoms such as palpitations, increased heart rate, or unusual heartbeat sensations after recovering from the virus. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as "post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection" (PASC), commonly known as long COVID. These symptoms can arise due to several factors, including inflammation, stress, or changes in autonomic nervous system function.
The sensations you describe—hearing your heartbeat in different areas—could be attributed to heightened awareness of bodily sensations, which can occur after an illness, especially one that has caused significant stress or anxiety. This heightened awareness can lead to a condition known as "somatic amplification," where normal bodily sensations are perceived as more intense or alarming than they are.
While it is reassuring that you do not report other symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or significant fatigue, it is still important to monitor your condition. If the sensations persist or worsen, or if you begin to experience additional symptoms, it would be prudent to seek further evaluation from a healthcare professional. A thorough examination may include an electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiogram, or other tests to assess your heart's function and rule out any underlying issues.
In the meantime, there are several strategies you can employ to help manage your symptoms and overall well-being. Engaging in regular physical activity, practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation, and ensuring adequate sleep can all contribute positively to your recovery. Additionally, maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can support your overall health and potentially alleviate some symptoms.
If you find that your anxiety about these sensations is increasing, consider discussing this with a mental health professional. Anxiety can exacerbate physical symptoms, and addressing it may help improve your overall experience.
In summary, while your current symptoms may not warrant immediate concern, it is essential to remain vigilant. If the sensations continue or you develop new symptoms, seeking medical advice is advisable. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and a healthcare provider can help you navigate these concerns effectively.
