Genital issues
Hello doctor, I would like to ask about something I've noticed since childhood.
I have only one labium minora, while the other side seems to be absent.
Is this a normal phenomenon? Additionally, I have noticed that on the side where there is no labium minora, there is something inside that feels rough to the touch.
It is about the same size as the labium minora (a bit thicker), but it is flesh-colored rather than the darker color of the other side.
It only itches when I touch it; otherwise, it doesn't bother me much.
I found it strange, so I took a picture, and it looks like a flesh-colored mass with a somewhat pitted appearance.
I would like to know what this issue might be (this has not just happened recently; it has been going on for some time).
Thank you.
cccc, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/07/07
Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, based on your description of symptoms, it is difficult to determine if they are normal.
It is recommended that if you do not experience any discomfort, you can observe for another one to two years.
If issues persist, please consult a gynecologist for further evaluation.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Chang.

Understanding asymmetry and unusual growths in the labia can be a source of concern for many women. It’s important to remember that anatomical variations are common, and many women experience asymmetry in their labia. In your case, you mentioned that one side of your labia minora (the inner lips) appears different from the other, which is not unusual. Many women have labia that are not perfectly symmetrical, and this can be completely normal.
However, you also described noticing a rough, flesh-colored area on the side that seems to be less developed. This could be a number of things, and while it’s good that you are paying attention to changes in your body, it’s essential to approach this with a clear understanding of what might be happening.
1. Asymmetry: As mentioned, asymmetry in the labia is common. The labia can vary in size, shape, and color from one side to the other. This is typically a normal anatomical variation and does not usually indicate any health issues.
2. Rough Texture: The rough texture you described could be due to several benign conditions. It might be a normal variation of the skin or could be related to friction, irritation, or even a benign growth such as a skin tag or a cyst. If it is not causing significant discomfort or changes, it may not be a cause for concern.
3. Color Changes: The difference in color between the two sides of your labia can also be normal. Skin pigmentation can vary widely among individuals and even on different parts of the same person’s body. However, if you notice any sudden changes in color, texture, or if the area becomes painful, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional.
4. Itching: The itching you experience when you touch the area could indicate irritation or sensitivity. This could be due to a variety of factors, including hygiene products, soaps, or even friction from clothing. If the itching persists or worsens, it’s advisable to seek medical advice.
5. Observation and Consultation: Since you have been observing this area for some time and have concerns about its appearance, it would be beneficial to schedule an appointment with a gynecologist. They can perform a physical examination and provide a more accurate diagnosis. It’s important to discuss any changes you’ve noticed, including the rough texture and any itching, so they can assess whether further investigation or treatment is necessary.
In summary, while asymmetry in the labia is generally normal, any new or unusual growths, changes in texture, or persistent itching should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Regular gynecological check-ups are essential for maintaining reproductive health and addressing any concerns you may have. Remember, your health and comfort are paramount, and seeking professional advice is always a good step when you have questions about your body.
