Drug side effects of Sevina?

Hello, I am 29 years old and have not had my period for six months.
Last week, I visited a doctor, and after examination, my ovaries were found to be normal.
The doctor prescribed me Sivina for 28 days, but after taking it for a week, I feel fatigued and often experience abdominal bloating (even when I haven't eaten much).
I would like to know if this could be a side effect of the medication.
Thank you for your response, doctor.

Liu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/07/10

Hello, the common side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, edema, and changes in appetite or weight, but they are generally not severe.
If the symptoms worsen and become intolerable, please return for a follow-up.

More Info

Sevina, known generically as Medroxyprogesterone Acetate, is a hormonal medication often prescribed for various gynecological conditions, including irregular menstruation and endometriosis. While it can be effective in managing these conditions, it is essential to understand the potential side effects and how they may impact your overall health.

In your case, experiencing fatigue and abdominal bloating after starting Sevina could indeed be related to the medication. Hormonal treatments can influence your body's normal physiological processes, leading to various side effects. Common side effects of Sevina include mood changes, weight gain, breast tenderness, and gastrointestinal disturbances such as bloating or nausea. These symptoms can occur as your body adjusts to the hormonal changes induced by the medication.

It's important to note that hormonal treatments can also affect your menstrual cycle. Some individuals may experience breakthrough bleeding or spotting, especially during the initial months of treatment. This is due to the way hormonal medications interact with the endometrial lining and can be a normal response as your body acclimates to the new hormone levels. However, if the bleeding is heavy or accompanied by severe pain, it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider.

Regarding your concern about the absence of menstruation for six months prior to starting Sevina, this condition, known as amenorrhea, can be caused by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, significant weight changes, or underlying medical conditions. Since your doctor has ruled out ovarian abnormalities, it is likely that the Sevina is intended to help regulate your menstrual cycle and restore hormonal balance.

As for the fatigue you are experiencing, it is not uncommon for hormonal medications to cause feelings of tiredness, particularly in the early stages of treatment. This fatigue can be attributed to the body's adjustment to new hormone levels, which may temporarily disrupt your energy levels. If this fatigue persists or worsens, it is advisable to discuss it with your healthcare provider, as they may need to evaluate your overall health and consider alternative treatments or adjustments to your current regimen.

In addition to these side effects, it is also essential to be aware of the potential for skin changes while taking Sevina. As mentioned in previous discussions, hormonal treatments can increase skin sensitivity, leading to conditions such as melasma (dark patches on the skin) or other pigmentation changes. It is advisable to protect your skin from direct sunlight and use sunscreen to minimize these risks.

In conclusion, while Sevina can be an effective treatment for gynecological issues, it is essential to monitor your body's response to the medication. If you experience persistent or severe side effects, or if you have concerns about your menstrual cycle or overall health, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. They can provide personalized advice and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan to ensure your well-being. Always remember that open communication with your healthcare team is vital in managing your health effectively.
