Dental bridge cleaning issues - Super floss?

Hello Dr.
Tseng,
I had a dental bridge (from the upper right canine to the first molar) placed in April of this year.
The dentist who installed the bridge told me that since the new bridge fits very well, I only need to return for regular cleanings and do not need to use super floss to clean underneath the bridge for now.
He mentioned that improper use could actually cause the bridge to become less tight.
However, I consulted another dentist at a different clinic, and he advised me to use super floss daily to clean under the bridge.

I would like to ask Dr.
Tseng: given my current situation, do I need to use super floss every day to clean under the bridge? Thank you for your response.

It is still recommended to use super floss daily to clean around the dental bridge after it is installed, to prevent plaque accumulation in the gaps, which can lead to gum inflammation and even secondary cavities.

More Info

When it comes to maintaining a dental bridge, the question of whether to use super floss daily is indeed a crucial one. Based on the information provided, it appears that there are differing opinions among dental professionals regarding the necessity of using super floss for cleaning around your dental bridge.

Firstly, it is important to understand what a dental bridge is and how it functions. A dental bridge is a prosthetic device used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring to adjacent teeth (the abutments). While dental bridges can restore functionality and aesthetics, they also require diligent oral hygiene practices to ensure their longevity and the health of the surrounding gum tissue.

The first dentist you consulted mentioned that your new bridge is tightly fitted and that regular dental cleanings should suffice for maintenance, suggesting that using super floss might actually compromise the fit of the bridge if not done correctly. This perspective is not uncommon, especially in cases where the bridge is new and well-sealed. However, it is essential to consider that even well-fitted bridges can accumulate plaque and food particles in the spaces between the bridge and the gums. If left uncleaned, this can lead to gum inflammation, decay of the supporting teeth, and even potential failure of the bridge.

On the other hand, the second dentist's recommendation to use super floss daily is more aligned with the general consensus in dental hygiene practices. Super floss is designed to clean around dental appliances, including bridges, by effectively reaching areas that regular floss may not. The use of super floss can help remove plaque and debris from under the bridge, thereby reducing the risk of gum disease and cavities in the adjacent teeth.

In summary, while the first dentist's advice may be applicable in certain situations, the second dentist's recommendation to use super floss daily is more in line with best practices for maintaining oral hygiene around dental bridges. It is advisable to incorporate super floss into your daily routine, especially since it can help prevent complications that could arise from neglecting the cleaning of the bridge area.

Additionally, here are some tips for using super floss effectively:
1. Technique: Gently slide the super floss under the bridge and use a back-and-forth motion to clean the area. Be careful not to force it, as this could damage the bridge.

2. Frequency: Aim to use super floss at least once a day, preferably before bedtime, to ensure that any food particles and plaque are removed.

3. Regular Check-ups: Continue to visit your dentist for regular cleanings and check-ups. They can monitor the health of your gums and the integrity of the bridge.

4. Overall Oral Hygiene: Maintain a comprehensive oral hygiene routine that includes brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and regular use of mouthwash.

In conclusion, while the initial advice you received may seem reasonable, the importance of daily cleaning around your dental bridge cannot be overstated. Using super floss daily will help maintain the health of your gums and the longevity of your dental bridge. If you have any concerns or experience discomfort while using super floss, it is best to consult your dentist for personalized guidance.
