The sensation of instability or inconsistency during penile erection?
Hello Doctor, I have noticed that my penis feels unstable and inconsistent during erections (although it does have firmness).
I am very afraid of injuring it from the base when masturbating.
I came across a blog post that describes the so-called deep suspensory ligament (the blog describes it very aptly as not having a "towering" sensation during an erection), which reminded me of the sharp, knife-like pain I often feel in my lower abdomen after exercising.
I wonder if I might have injured that area or if it could be psychological (just a guess?).
If I go to the hospital, can I explain this to the doctor? I am feeling very distressed about this.

Understanding unstable erection sensations can be a complex issue that involves both physical and psychological factors. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a sensation of instability during erections, despite having adequate hardness. This can be concerning and may lead to anxiety, especially if you associate it with previous physical discomfort or injuries.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that the penis is supported by various structures, including the deep suspensory ligament, which you mentioned. This ligament helps anchor the penis to the pubic bone and plays a role in maintaining its position during an erection. If there has been any trauma or strain to this area, it could potentially affect how you perceive stability during an erection. However, it's also crucial to consider that sensations of instability may not always be linked to physical injury.
The pain you experienced in your lower abdomen after exercise could be related to a number of factors, including muscle strain, hernias, or even issues related to the pelvic floor. If the pain was sharp and localized, it might be worth discussing with a healthcare provider, as it could provide clues about any underlying conditions that might be affecting your sexual function.
Psychological factors can also play a significant role in sexual health. Anxiety about performance, fear of injury, or negative past experiences can lead to heightened sensitivity and concern during sexual activities. This can create a cycle where anxiety exacerbates the sensation of instability, leading to further anxiety. It’s essential to address these psychological aspects, as they can significantly impact your sexual experiences.
When you visit a healthcare provider, it’s entirely appropriate to discuss your concerns openly. You can describe the sensations you are experiencing, any past injuries, and the psychological stress you feel surrounding these issues. A thorough evaluation may include a physical examination, and possibly imaging studies if there is a concern about structural issues. Additionally, your doctor may ask about your sexual history, any medications you are taking, and your overall mental health.
If physical causes are ruled out, your doctor may suggest strategies to manage anxiety, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), relaxation techniques, or even sex therapy. These approaches can help you develop a healthier relationship with your body and sexual function, reducing the fear and anxiety that may be contributing to your sensations of instability.
In summary, while there may be physical factors at play, psychological influences should not be overlooked. It’s crucial to approach this issue holistically, considering both the physical and emotional aspects of your experience. Seeking help from a qualified healthcare provider is a positive step towards understanding and addressing your concerns. Remember, you are not alone in this, and many individuals experience similar issues. Open communication with your healthcare provider will be key in finding a solution that works for you.
