Pain at the tip of the glans?

Hello doctor, about two weeks ago I noticed peeling on the glans of my penis.
After two or three days, the peeling stopped, but now I experience a stinging sensation at the opening of the glans (the meatus) when urinating or touching it.
It seems slightly swollen, though I'm not entirely sure, and I've also been experiencing significant urinary splitting that has persisted until now.
It hasn't worsened, but it also hasn't improved.
I would like to ask the doctor what this could possibly be.
Is medication necessary for treatment, or is there a chance it could resolve on its own? If medication is not strictly necessary, what methods can help it heal more quickly?

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/07/28

Hello: If you are experiencing peeling skin, you should seek medical attention.
As for the splitting, a urine test can be conducted.
In the meantime, keep the area clean and dry.
Drink plenty of water.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding pain at the tip of the penis, particularly in the glans (the head of the penis), can be concerning and may arise from various causes. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a few symptoms: peeling skin on the glans, sharp pain during urination, slight swelling, and a change in the urine stream. Let's explore potential causes and treatments for these symptoms.

Possible Causes
1. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans, often caused by infections (bacterial or fungal), irritants (such as soaps or lotions), or poor hygiene. Symptoms typically include redness, swelling, and pain, especially during urination.

2. Yeast Infection: A common cause of glans irritation, particularly if you have had recent changes in hygiene or if you are uncircumcised. Symptoms may include itching, burning, and a discharge.

3. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs can cause pain and irritation in the genital area. If there is a possibility of exposure, it is essential to consider this as a potential cause.

4. Allergic Reaction or Irritation: Sometimes, products like soaps, lubricants, or even latex condoms can cause allergic reactions leading to peeling skin and pain.

5. Phimosis: If the foreskin cannot be easily retracted, it can lead to irritation and inflammation of the glans.

6. Urethritis: Inflammation of the urethra can cause pain during urination and may lead to changes in the urine stream.

Treatment Options
1. Good Hygiene: Maintain proper hygiene by gently washing the area with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh soaps or products that may irritate the skin.

2. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter antifungal creams or hydrocortisone creams may help if the issue is due to a yeast infection or inflammation. However, it's essential to consult a healthcare provider before starting any treatment.

3. Avoid Irritants: Identify and avoid any products that may be causing irritation, including soaps, lotions, or condoms.

4. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking enough water, as proper hydration can help maintain urinary tract health.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given the symptoms you are experiencing, especially the pain during urination and the change in urine stream, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They may perform a physical examination, and possibly recommend tests such as a urinalysis or swab to identify any infections.

6. Medication: If an infection is diagnosed, your healthcare provider may prescribe antibiotics or antifungal medications. For STIs, specific treatments will be necessary depending on the infection.

When to Seek Immediate Care
If you experience any of the following, seek immediate medical attention:
- Severe pain that does not improve with over-the-counter medications.

- Fever or chills, which may indicate a systemic infection.

- Any signs of a more severe condition, such as swelling that affects urination or severe bleeding.

Conclusion
While some mild cases of irritation may resolve on their own, your symptoms suggest that a medical evaluation is warranted. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and ensure a quicker recovery. It's essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and any concerns you may have. They can provide tailored advice and treatment options based on your specific situation.
