Labial swelling
Recently, after sexual intercourse on July 15, my labia became swollen.
It is not painful or itchy, but the degree of swelling affects my daily life.
The swelling subsided approximately two days after intercourse.
Initially, I suspected it might be an allergy to the material of the condom, but my partner only used their hands afterward, and I still experienced swelling.
The appearance resembles that of a "sausage lip," and I can feel the swelling when my legs are together or while walking.
The discharge is normal, but the next day, the swelling went down, and I started to experience slight itching in the vagina.
Could this be a bacterial infection or inflammation? Thank you!

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, based on your symptom description, it is more likely to be edema or an infection.
I recommend that you consult a physician for an examination to determine the underlying cause and to prescribe appropriate medication.
In the meantime, please keep the perineal area clean and dry, avoid wearing tight clothing, ensure adequate sleep, maintain a light diet, and avoid stress and prolonged sitting.
You may also soak in a bath to alleviate symptoms.
If symptoms persist, please seek medical diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

More Info
Lip swelling after sexual activity can be concerning, especially when it affects daily life. Based on your description, it seems that the swelling of your labia occurred after sexual intercourse, and while it resolved within a couple of days, you also experienced some itching afterward. Let's break down the potential causes and concerns regarding your symptoms.
Possible Causes of Lip Swelling
1. Allergic Reaction: One of the most common reasons for swelling in the genital area after sexual activity is an allergic reaction. This could be due to the materials in condoms (such as latex), lubricants, or even personal care products used by you or your partner. If you suspect an allergy, it may be beneficial to try hypoallergenic products or those specifically designed for sensitive skin.
2. Irritation: Physical irritation can occur due to friction during sexual activity, especially if there was a lack of lubrication. This can lead to swelling and discomfort. If your partner used their hands, the pressure and movement could also contribute to irritation.
3. Infection: While you mentioned that your discharge was normal, it’s still important to consider the possibility of a bacterial or yeast infection. These infections can cause swelling, itching, and discomfort. The fact that you experienced itching after the swelling subsided could indicate a mild infection or irritation.
4. Inflammation: Inflammation can occur due to various reasons, including infections or even hormonal changes. If your body is reacting to something, it may cause localized swelling.
Concerns and Recommendations
- Observation: Since the swelling resolved quickly and you did not experience pain or significant discomfort, it may not be a cause for alarm. However, if the symptoms recur or worsen, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider.
- Hygiene: Maintaining good genital hygiene is crucial. After sexual activity, ensure that you clean the area gently with mild soap and water to reduce the risk of infections.
- Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that certain products may be causing irritation or allergic reactions, consider eliminating them from your routine. This includes scented soaps, lotions, or any products that come into contact with the genital area.
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the swelling returns or if you develop additional symptoms such as unusual discharge, persistent itching, or discomfort, it is advisable to see a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough examination and possibly run tests to rule out infections or other underlying conditions.
- Consider STI Testing: If you have concerns about sexually transmitted infections (STIs), especially if you have multiple partners or if your partner has had previous partners, consider getting tested. Some STIs can present with mild symptoms or may not show symptoms at all.
Conclusion
In summary, while the swelling of your labia after sexual activity could be due to an allergic reaction, irritation, or even an early sign of infection, the fact that it resolved quickly is a positive sign. However, the subsequent itching warrants attention. Monitoring your symptoms and maintaining good hygiene practices are essential. If you have ongoing concerns or if symptoms persist, do not hesitate to seek medical advice for a more personalized assessment and treatment.
