Can a 15-year-old who is about to turn 16 still grow?

I am turning 16 this year, and I have heard many people say that the growth plates close at 16.
I am currently 159 cm tall and would like to know if I still have a chance to grow to 175 cm.
I grew from 137 cm to 157.5 cm during middle school, and I hope to reach 175 cm in high school.
Please help me with this question.
Thank you.

Hello: You can still grow taller, but it may not reach 175 cm.
Males typically have their growth plates close later, around 18 years of age, though this varies from person to person.

As you approach the age of 16, it's natural to wonder about your growth potential and whether you can still increase your height. The question of whether you can grow taller after turning 16 is a common concern among teenagers, especially those who are still in their growth phase.
To begin with, it's important to understand how height growth works. Height is primarily determined by the growth of long bones in the body, which occurs at the growth plates (epiphyseal plates) located at the ends of these bones. During puberty, these growth plates are active, allowing for significant increases in height. For most girls, growth spurts occur earlier, typically starting around ages 10 to 14, and they often reach their adult height by the age of 16 to 18. Boys, on the other hand, usually experience their growth spurts a bit later, from ages 12 to 16, and may continue to grow until around age 18 to 21.

Given your current height of 159 cm and your goal of reaching 175 cm, it's essential to consider a few factors. First, while many individuals may still grow a little after age 16, the amount of growth typically decreases significantly as you approach adulthood. If your growth plates are still open, there is a possibility for further growth, but if they are closing, which often happens around this age, your potential for increasing height may be limited.

Here are some strategies that may help you maximize your growth potential:
1. Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is crucial for growth. Focus on consuming adequate amounts of calcium, vitamin D, protein, and other vitamins and minerals. Foods like dairy products, lean meats, fish, fruits, and vegetables should be staples in your diet. Proper nutrition supports bone health and overall growth.

2. Exercise: Regular physical activity is vital. Engaging in sports that promote stretching and strengthening, such as basketball, swimming, and gymnastics, can be beneficial. Exercises that involve jumping and stretching can stimulate growth hormones and improve posture, which may help you appear taller.

3. Sleep: Adequate sleep is essential for growth, especially during adolescence. Growth hormone is primarily released during deep sleep, so aim for 8 to 10 hours of quality sleep each night to support your body's growth processes.

4. Posture: Maintaining good posture can make a significant difference in how tall you appear. Slouching can compress your spine and make you look shorter than you are. Practice standing and sitting up straight to maximize your height.

5. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If you have concerns about your growth or if you suspect any underlying health issues, it's wise to consult a healthcare professional. They can assess your growth plates through X-rays and provide personalized advice based on your individual growth pattern and family history.

In conclusion, while the likelihood of significant height increases diminishes after age 16, there are still steps you can take to optimize your growth potential. Focus on a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep. Remember that genetics plays a significant role in determining your final height, so it's essential to set realistic expectations. Embrace your unique growth journey, and prioritize your overall health and well-being.
