Varicocele

Hello Doctor, recently I have started to feel a noticeable structure at the junction between my testicles and penis.
I'm not sure what it is, but I can feel a difference between the left and right sides, so I suspect it might be a blood vessel.
I was diagnosed with varicocele at the hospital a while ago, but the doctor said surgery was not necessary and advised me to just monitor it.
Lately, I have been feeling a pronounced sensation of blood vessels in that area, which is not painful but feels uncomfortable.
I have a simple sexual life, and I'm unsure if this is related to my sexual activity or something else.
Do you think I need to get this checked?

Hello: Many people have varicose veins, and if there are no symptoms, it can be monitored.
It is not caused by sexual activity.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

Varicocele is a condition characterized by the enlargement of veins within the scrotum, similar to varicose veins that can occur in the legs. It is relatively common, affecting about 15% of men, and is often found on the left side due to anatomical differences in venous drainage. Understanding the symptoms, concerns, and when to seek help is crucial for managing this condition effectively.

Symptoms of Varicocele
1. Palpable Veins: As you mentioned, one of the most noticeable symptoms is the feeling of enlarged veins in the scrotum. This can often be described as a "bag of worms" sensation when palpated.

2. Discomfort or Pain: While you noted that you do not experience pain, some individuals may feel a dull ache or discomfort, especially after prolonged standing or physical activity. This discomfort can sometimes be relieved by lying down.

3. Changes in Testicular Size: Varicocele can lead to testicular atrophy, where one testicle may become smaller than the other over time.

4. Fertility Issues: Varicocele is associated with male infertility, as it can affect sperm production and quality. If you are planning to conceive, this is an important consideration.

Concerns Related to Varicocele
- Infertility: As mentioned, varicocele can impact fertility. If you and your partner are trying to conceive and have been unsuccessful, it may be worth discussing this condition with a urologist who specializes in male fertility.

- Testicular Health: While varicocele itself is usually not dangerous, it can sometimes be associated with other conditions, such as testicular torsion or tumors. Regular monitoring is essential.

- Psychological Impact: The awareness of having a varicocele can lead to anxiety or concern about sexual performance and fertility, which can affect mental health and relationships.

When to Seek Help
You should consider seeking further medical evaluation if:
1. Increased Discomfort: If you start experiencing pain or significant discomfort in the affected area, it may warrant further investigation.

2. Changes in Size or Shape: If you notice any significant changes in the size or shape of your testicles, or if one testicle appears to be shrinking, this should be evaluated.

3. Fertility Concerns: If you are experiencing difficulties with fertility, it is advisable to consult a specialist who can assess the impact of varicocele on your reproductive health.

4. Persistent Symptoms: If the sensation of the enlarged veins becomes bothersome or if you have concerns about your sexual health, it is important to discuss these with a healthcare provider.

Conclusion
In your case, since you have already been diagnosed with varicocele and your doctor has recommended observation, it is essential to monitor your symptoms. If you notice any changes or if your discomfort increases, do not hesitate to seek a follow-up appointment. Additionally, if you have concerns about your sexual health or fertility, discussing these with a urologist can provide you with tailored advice and potential treatment options. Regular check-ups can help ensure that any changes in your condition are addressed promptly, allowing you to maintain both physical and mental well-being.
