There is a hole after wisdom tooth extraction?

Hello, doctor.
I had a revision surgery on August 3rd, and I returned for suture removal on August 10th.
After the sutures were removed, I noticed a hole at the site of the previous incision, and the tissue hasn't completely healed; there's also a stitch still present.
I would like to ask how long this situation might last.
Approximately how long will the pain from tissue regeneration persist?

Baozi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/08/13

Hello: Generally, gum wounds will completely close within about one month.
However, if there was bone recontouring at that time, it will take at least 3 to 6 months for the bone to fully heal!

After undergoing wisdom tooth extraction, it is common to have concerns about the healing process and what to expect in terms of recovery. The healing timeline can vary significantly from person to person, depending on several factors, including the complexity of the extraction, the individual's overall health, and how well they follow post-operative care instructions.

Typically, after a wisdom tooth extraction, the initial healing phase occurs within the first week. During this time, you may experience swelling, discomfort, and some bleeding, which are all normal. By the time you return to have your stitches removed, as you did on August 10, you should start to notice a reduction in these symptoms. However, it is not uncommon for patients to still have some discomfort or a feeling of "a hole" where the tooth was removed, especially if the extraction was surgical and involved cutting into the gum tissue.

The healing of the gum tissue can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. Generally, the soft tissue should begin to heal within two weeks, but complete healing, including the filling in of the socket where the tooth was, can take up to three to six months. The pain you are experiencing may be due to several factors, including inflammation, the healing process itself, or even the presence of food particles in the extraction site.
To manage pain and discomfort, it is essential to follow your dentist's post-operative care instructions. This typically includes:
1. Pain Management: Use over-the-counter pain relievers as recommended by your dentist. If the pain persists or worsens, consult your dentist for further evaluation.

2. Oral Hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene, but be gentle around the extraction site. Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting, as this can dislodge the blood clot that is essential for healing.

3. Diet: Stick to a soft diet for the first few days post-extraction. Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods that could irritate the extraction site.

4. Follow-Up Appointments: Keep any follow-up appointments with your dentist to monitor the healing process. If you notice increased pain, swelling, or any signs of infection (such as pus or fever), contact your dentist immediately.

5. Avoid Smoking: If you smoke, try to refrain from doing so during the healing process, as smoking can impede healing and increase the risk of complications.

Regarding your specific question about how long the discomfort and the feeling of a hole will last, it can vary. Many patients report that the pain diminishes significantly after the first week, but some residual discomfort can linger for a few weeks as the tissue continues to heal. If you still feel significant pain or if the area appears to be worsening, it is advisable to return to your dentist for an evaluation. They may need to check for any complications, such as dry socket or infection, which can occur after tooth extractions.

In summary, while some discomfort and the sensation of a hole are normal after wisdom tooth extraction, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms and maintain communication with your dental care provider. With proper care and attention, you should expect to see gradual improvement in your healing process.
