Combination of medications!
Dear Doctor: Due to my mitral valve prolapse, I need root canal treatment, and my dentist prescribed antibiotics for me.
However, a few days ago, I fractured my clavicle, and the orthopedic doctor prescribed Cataflam for me.
Can Voren and Cataflam be used together? Are there any potential side effects? Also, are there any side effects from taking too much amoxicillin?

Dr. Liao Huiling reply Pharmacology
Ms.
Kuo: Hello! Cataflam and Voren both contain the same active ingredient, diclofenac, so you only need to take one of them.
Taking both simultaneously may lead to an excessive dosage, which can exacerbate gastrointestinal irritation as a side effect.
As for amoxicillin, it is an antibiotic, and unless you have an allergy to this class of medications, it is generally safe to use.
Therefore, there is no need to worry about side effects.
It is important to take your medication on schedule and complete the treatment as prescribed by your physician; do not stop taking the medication on your own to ensure optimal therapeutic effects.

More Info
When it comes to mixing medications, particularly Voren (which contains diclofenac) and Cataflam (also containing diclofenac), there are significant safety concerns to consider. Both Voren and Cataflam are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that work by reducing inflammation and pain. Since they contain the same active ingredient, taking them together is not advisable. Doing so could lead to an excessive dose of diclofenac, which increases the risk of side effects, particularly gastrointestinal issues such as stomach ulcers, bleeding, and irritation.
The gastrointestinal side effects of NSAIDs are well-documented. They can cause stomach upset, nausea, and even more severe complications like gastrointestinal bleeding, especially in individuals with a history of ulcers or those who consume alcohol regularly. Therefore, if you are prescribed both Voren and Cataflam, it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider to determine which medication is more appropriate for your condition and to avoid taking both simultaneously.
Regarding Amoxicillin, this antibiotic is generally well-tolerated and effective for treating bacterial infections, such as those that may arise after dental procedures like root canals. However, like all medications, it can have side effects. Common side effects of Amoxicillin include gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. More serious but rare side effects can include allergic reactions, which may manifest as rashes, itching, or even anaphylaxis in severe cases. It is essential to take Amoxicillin as prescribed and complete the full course of treatment, even if you start to feel better before finishing the medication. Stopping an antibiotic prematurely can lead to antibiotic resistance and may not fully eradicate the infection.
In summary, mixing Voren and Cataflam is not safe due to their identical active ingredient, which can lead to an overdose and increased side effects. It is best to choose one based on your healthcare provider's advice. As for Amoxicillin, while it is generally safe when taken as directed, be mindful of potential side effects and report any unusual symptoms to your doctor. Always communicate openly with your healthcare providers about all medications you are taking to ensure safe and effective treatment.
