Peeling and stinging around the lips?

Doctor, I have mild peeling around my lips on both sides, so I tried applying moisturizer and petroleum jelly, but as soon as I apply them, I feel a stinging sensation, and the peeling hasn't improved at all.
I really don't know what to do.
Even just touching the area around my lips, especially the upper lip, is very painful, and I feel like I might have cheilitis, but my lips themselves are not affected, only the area around them.

Understanding the causes and solutions for peeling and pain around the lips can be quite complex, as various factors may contribute to this condition. The symptoms you describe—peeling, pain, and sensitivity around the lip area—could be indicative of several underlying issues, including but not limited to contact dermatitis, allergic reactions, or even a form of cheilitis (inflammation of the lips).

Possible Causes:
1. Contact Dermatitis: This is a common cause of irritation and peeling around the lips. It can occur due to exposure to irritants such as certain cosmetics, lip balms, or even toothpaste. If you have recently changed any products you use around your mouth, this could be a potential culprit.

2. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to specific ingredients in skincare products or food can lead to inflammation and peeling. If you have introduced new products or foods into your routine, consider whether they could be causing an allergic reaction.

3. Cheilitis: This condition can manifest as inflammation of the lips and surrounding skin, leading to peeling and pain. It can be caused by various factors, including environmental conditions (like dry weather), nutritional deficiencies (such as vitamin B deficiencies), or even fungal infections.

4. Dehydration: Insufficient hydration can lead to dry skin, including around the lips. Ensure you are drinking enough water and consider using a humidifier in dry environments.

5. Sun Damage: Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause damage to the delicate skin around the lips, leading to peeling and discomfort. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, consider using a lip balm with SPF.

Solutions and Recommendations:
1. Avoid Irritants: Identify and eliminate any potential irritants from your skincare routine. This includes avoiding harsh soaps, fragrances, and any new products that may have triggered the reaction.

2. Moisturize: While you mentioned using creams and Vaseline, it may be beneficial to try a thicker ointment or a specialized lip balm that is free from fragrances and allergens. Look for products containing ingredients like shea butter, beeswax, or lanolin, which can provide a protective barrier and help retain moisture.

3. Hydration: Increase your water intake and consider using a humidifier in your home, especially during dry seasons. Keeping your skin hydrated from the inside out is crucial.

4. Sun Protection: If you suspect sun damage, apply a lip balm with SPF before going outdoors. This will protect the sensitive skin around your lips from further damage.

5. Consult a Dermatologist: If the condition persists despite your efforts, it is essential to consult a dermatologist. They can provide a thorough examination, possibly perform patch testing for allergies, and recommend appropriate treatments, which may include topical steroids or antifungal medications if an infection is suspected.

6. Avoid Scratching or Rubbing: As tempting as it may be, try to avoid touching or rubbing the affected area, as this can exacerbate irritation and delay healing.

In summary, while the symptoms you are experiencing can be uncomfortable and concerning, there are several potential causes and solutions to explore. By identifying irritants, ensuring proper hydration, and protecting your skin from environmental factors, you may find relief. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, seeking professional medical advice is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan.
