Elevated body temperature?
Hello Dr.
Hong, on Sunday morning (8/21), I bought a rice ball from a convenience store and noticed that the bottom packaging was damaged after taking a few bites, so I discarded it.
Later that evening, I felt a bit unwell while staying in an air-conditioned room, experiencing a sensation of heat on my forehead (ear temperature around 36.8-36.9°C).
I also had a poor appetite, some nausea, and felt a bit of chest tightness with an unusual heart rhythm.
I would like to ask if this could be due to my anxiety about the situation or if the damaged packaging could have caused some adverse effects (like food poisoning)? Should I seek medical attention or undergo any tests? Thank you for your response.

Hello, since convenience store food is kept at low temperatures throughout the transportation process, the damaged packaging you mentioned should not significantly affect the food itself.
Unless you are experiencing any discomfort, there is currently no need for you to seek medical attention.
Thank you for your inquiry.

When it comes to understanding elevated body temperature, it is essential to recognize that body temperature can fluctuate due to various factors, including environmental conditions, physical activity, and underlying health issues. In your case, you experienced a slight increase in body temperature and some discomfort after consuming food from a damaged package. This situation raises a few important points regarding potential causes and when to seek medical attention.
Firstly, the normal range for body temperature is typically between 36.1°C and 37.2°C (97°F to 99°F). A temperature of 36.8°C to 36.9°C is generally considered normal, but it can be on the higher end of the spectrum, especially if you feel unwell. Factors such as anxiety can indeed influence your perception of body temperature and overall well-being. Anxiety can lead to physical symptoms, including increased heart rate, sweating, and a feeling of warmth, which may contribute to your perception of being feverish.
Regarding your concerns about food safety, consuming food from a damaged package can pose a risk of foodborne illness, especially if the food was contaminated. Symptoms of food poisoning can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. However, the onset of symptoms can vary depending on the type of bacteria or virus involved. If you are experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms, it is crucial to monitor your condition closely.
In your case, you mentioned feeling chest tightness and an unusual heart rhythm. These symptoms can be concerning, especially if they are new or different from what you typically experience. While they could be related to anxiety, they could also indicate a more serious condition, particularly if they persist or worsen. It is essential to take such symptoms seriously, especially if they are accompanied by other signs such as shortness of breath, severe headache, or persistent vomiting.
Given your situation, here are some recommendations:
1. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of your body temperature and any other symptoms you may experience. If your temperature rises above 37.5°C (99.5°F) or if you develop additional symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or severe abdominal pain, it may be time to seek medical attention.
2. Stay Hydrated: If you suspect food poisoning, it is crucial to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, especially if you experience any gastrointestinal symptoms.
3. Seek Medical Attention: If your symptoms persist, worsen, or if you experience significant discomfort, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly laboratory tests, to determine the cause of your symptoms.
4. Consider Anxiety Management: If you believe that anxiety is contributing to your symptoms, consider discussing this with a healthcare provider. They can provide strategies for managing anxiety, which may help alleviate some of the physical symptoms you are experiencing.
In summary, while your current symptoms may be related to anxiety or mild food-related discomfort, it is essential to remain vigilant. If you experience any worsening of symptoms or new concerning signs, do not hesitate to seek medical care. Your health and well-being are paramount, and a healthcare professional can provide the necessary guidance and support.
