Weak urination and absence of morning erections?
Hello doctor, I have been experiencing weak urine flow for over a month, and I have to wait a few seconds before I can urinate.
Additionally, I have not had morning erections.
Could this be related to masturbation? (I masturbate about once or twice a week.) I want to quit but have not been successful.
If I continue to refrain from masturbation, how long might it take for improvements to occur?

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: It is likely not related to masturbation.
It's important to pay attention to your health, ensure you are drinking enough fluids, and monitor your urine color to avoid it being too dark (which indicates dehydration).
Maintain a regular exercise routine and ensure you get enough sleep.
If you still experience issues with urination after 2-3 weeks of following these guidelines, please consult a urologist at a hospital.
Wishing you good health.

The symptoms you are experiencing, including urinary weakness and the absence of morning erections, can be concerning and may have various underlying causes. It is essential to understand that both urinary function and erectile function are influenced by a complex interplay of physical, psychological, and hormonal factors.
Firstly, urinary weakness, or difficulty initiating urination, can be attributed to several potential issues. One common cause in men, especially as they age, is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is an enlargement of the prostate gland that can obstruct the flow of urine. Other possible causes include urinary tract infections (UTIs), bladder dysfunction, or even neurological conditions that affect bladder control. Given that you have been experiencing this symptom for over a month, it would be prudent to consult a urologist for a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly imaging studies or urodynamic testing.
Regarding the lack of morning erections, this can be influenced by several factors, including hormonal levels, psychological state, and overall health. Morning erections, or nocturnal penile tumescence, are a normal physiological response and can indicate healthy blood flow and nerve function. The absence of these erections may suggest issues such as low testosterone levels, psychological stress, or even lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and sleep quality.
You mentioned that you engage in masturbation approximately once or twice a week. While masturbation is a normal sexual activity and generally does not cause long-term harm to sexual function, excessive or compulsive masturbation can sometimes lead to temporary changes in sexual performance or libido. However, the frequency you described is within a typical range and is unlikely to be the sole cause of your symptoms.
If you are considering reducing or stopping masturbation to see if it improves your symptoms, it is essential to approach this with realistic expectations. Changes in sexual function can take time, and the duration for improvement can vary widely among individuals. Some may notice changes within a few weeks, while others may take longer. It is also crucial to address any underlying psychological factors, such as anxiety or stress, which can significantly impact both urinary and erectile function.
In summary, while your symptoms may be related to your masturbation habits, they could also indicate underlying medical conditions that require attention. I strongly recommend that you seek medical advice from a healthcare professional, preferably a urologist, who can provide a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate treatment options. Additionally, focusing on a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep, can contribute positively to your overall sexual health and well-being.
