The possibility of pregnancy after experiencing a miscarriage?
Hello, Doctor.
A few months ago, my menstrual cycle was from May 27 to June 2, and then from June 28 to July 6.
On July 13, I purchased emergency contraceptive pills from a pharmacy and started taking them.
This was my first time using contraceptive pills, and I took them consistently every night at 10 PM until July 31, when I stopped taking them, with two pills remaining.
Then, from August 5 to August 10, I experienced bleeding symptoms, which I found online to be referred to as withdrawal bleeding.
During the time I was taking the contraceptive pills, I engaged in sexual intercourse with ejaculation inside and did not use any other contraceptive methods.
Today, September 15, my period has not yet arrived.
I would like to ask you, Doctor, since I have experienced withdrawal bleeding, is there still a possibility of pregnancy? Given that my period is delayed, should I take a pregnancy test? Thank you.

Hello, you probably won't be pregnant, but you can take a pregnancy test to check.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to understanding the potential for pregnancy after experiencing withdrawal bleeding, it’s essential to first clarify what withdrawal bleeding is and how it relates to your menstrual cycle and contraceptive use.
Withdrawal bleeding typically occurs after stopping hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills. This bleeding is similar to a menstrual period and is a result of the sudden drop in hormone levels when the pills are discontinued. In your case, you started taking birth control pills on July 13 and stopped on July 31, which means that the bleeding you experienced from August 5 to August 10 could indeed be classified as withdrawal bleeding.
Now, regarding your question about the possibility of pregnancy: if you had unprotected intercourse during the time you were taking the birth control pills, there is a chance that you could have become pregnant. Birth control pills are designed to prevent ovulation, but if they are not taken consistently or if they are stopped abruptly, the effectiveness can be compromised. Since you mentioned that you had unprotected intercourse during the time you were on the pill, it’s important to consider that there is a possibility of pregnancy, even if you experienced withdrawal bleeding.
The absence of your period by September 15 is another crucial factor to consider. While withdrawal bleeding can mimic a menstrual period, it does not guarantee that ovulation has not occurred or that you are not pregnant. If you have missed your period, it is advisable to take a pregnancy test. Home pregnancy tests are generally reliable and can provide you with a clear answer regarding your pregnancy status.
In summary, while withdrawal bleeding can indicate that your body is adjusting after stopping hormonal contraceptives, it does not eliminate the possibility of pregnancy, especially if you engaged in unprotected sex during the time you were on the pill. Given that your period is late, taking a pregnancy test would be a prudent next step to determine whether you are pregnant.
Additionally, if you find yourself in a situation where you are unsure about your reproductive health or have further questions about your menstrual cycle, it is always a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current situation.
In conclusion, while withdrawal bleeding can be a normal response to stopping birth control, it does not rule out the possibility of pregnancy, especially if unprotected intercourse occurred. A missed period warrants a pregnancy test to clarify your status.
