Deep knee pain after a car accident?
I'm sorry to bother you! 😅 I was in a car accident three weeks ago.
I had an X-ray, and my bones were not injured; only soft tissue injuries were noted.
However, recently I have been unable to fully bend my knee, and it is very painful.
The pain is located around the outer sides and the middle of the knee, more towards the inside rather than on the surface.
I would like to know if it is possible that my knee sustained other injuries from the impact during the accident that were not diagnosed at the time of the medical evaluation.
Thank you very much! ~~🙏🙏🙏

The diagnosis is a knee joint contusion, which may have injured the underlying soft tissues.
There is no such thing as an undiagnosed condition for three weeks; it should still be quite painful.
Soft tissue healing typically requires more than six weeks.
Currently, treatment or rehabilitation is still necessary.

Knee pain following a car accident can be a complex issue, especially when initial X-rays do not reveal any fractures or significant injuries. Your description of deep pain around the sides and middle of the knee suggests that there may be underlying soft tissue injuries that are not visible on X-rays. These injuries can include damage to ligaments, tendons, cartilage, or muscles surrounding the knee joint.
In the context of a car accident, the knee can sustain various types of injuries due to the impact and sudden movements involved. Common soft tissue injuries include:
1. Ligament Injuries: The knee has several crucial ligaments, including the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the medial collateral ligament (MCL). A sudden impact can stretch or tear these ligaments, leading to pain, swelling, and instability in the knee.
2. Meniscus Tears: The meniscus is a C-shaped cartilage that acts as a cushion between the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone). A twisting motion during an accident can cause a meniscus tear, which may result in deep pain, swelling, and difficulty bending the knee.
3. Tendon Injuries: The quadriceps and patellar tendons are essential for knee movement. An impact can strain or rupture these tendons, causing pain, especially when trying to bend or straighten the knee.
4. Contusions and Bruising: Even if there are no visible fractures, deep bruising in the soft tissues around the knee can lead to significant pain and discomfort. This can take time to heal and may require physical therapy for recovery.
5. Synovitis: Inflammation of the synovial membrane, which lines the knee joint, can occur after trauma. This can lead to swelling and pain, particularly when moving the knee.
Given that you are experiencing pain three weeks post-accident, it is essential to follow up with a healthcare provider, preferably an orthopedic specialist or a physical therapist. They may recommend imaging studies such as an MRI, which can provide a clearer picture of soft tissue injuries that X-rays might miss.
In terms of recovery, soft tissue injuries can take several weeks to months to heal, depending on the severity. Treatment may include:
- Rest and Ice: Reducing activity and applying ice can help manage pain and swelling.
- Physical Therapy: A structured rehabilitation program can help restore strength and flexibility to the knee.
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribed medications can help alleviate discomfort.
- Gradual Return to Activity: Once healing progresses, a gradual return to normal activities, including any sports or exercises, is crucial to prevent re-injury.
In conclusion, while your initial assessment did not reveal any fractures, the symptoms you describe suggest that there may be deeper issues at play. It is crucial to seek further evaluation and treatment to ensure proper healing and to prevent long-term complications. Your knee's functionality is vital for daily activities and sports, so addressing these concerns promptly will be beneficial for your overall recovery.
