Chest tightness?
Hello Dr.
Lin, I received my first dose of the BNT vaccine last October, and that same night I experienced chest tightness and discomfort, prompting me to go to the emergency room.
The ER physician jokingly informed me that vaccine side effects do not occur that quickly and the likelihood is low.
They performed an electrocardiogram (ECG) and measured my blood pressure, which was approximately 140, indicating possible hypertension, but the ECG results were normal.
I was advised to monitor my blood pressure.
Subsequently, I measured my blood pressure daily, which remained around 140.
The chest tightness symptoms did not improve.
About half a month later, my blood pressure returned to normal, around 110, but the chest tightness persisted.
I thought that with time, the symptoms might improve, but they have not.
I feel particularly uncomfortable when taking deep breaths, and when I lie on my left side while sleeping, the chest tightness feels especially severe.
I would like to know which specialist I should see, as I am hesitant to visit a large hospital since I have only received one dose of the vaccine.

Hello: Since your chest discomfort has persisted for almost a year, the likelihood of it being related to the BNT vaccine is quite low.
Persistent chest discomfort may indicate potential issues with the heart or lungs.
It is recommended that you consult a cardiologist or a pulmonologist.

More Info
It sounds like you have been experiencing persistent chest tightness and discomfort since receiving your BNT vaccine, which has understandably caused you concern. Given your symptoms and the timeline of events, it is essential to approach this situation with caution and seek appropriate medical advice.
Firstly, it is important to recognize that while some individuals may experience mild side effects after vaccination, such as soreness at the injection site, fatigue, or mild fever, persistent symptoms like chest tightness warrant further investigation. Your experience of chest tightness, especially if it is affecting your ability to breathe deeply or is exacerbated by certain positions (like lying on your left side), should not be ignored.
In your case, since you have already undergone an electrocardiogram (ECG) that showed normal results, it is a good sign that there are no immediate cardiac issues. However, the fact that you continue to experience symptoms suggests that further evaluation is necessary. Given your history of elevated blood pressure and ongoing chest discomfort, I recommend that you consult a cardiologist. A cardiologist specializes in heart-related issues and can provide a more comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms. They may suggest additional tests, such as an echocardiogram or a stress test, to assess your heart's function and rule out any underlying conditions.
Additionally, it is worth considering that anxiety and stress can also manifest as physical symptoms, including chest tightness. If you have been feeling anxious about your health or the vaccine, discussing these feelings with a mental health professional may also be beneficial. They can help you develop coping strategies and address any underlying anxiety that may be contributing to your physical symptoms.
If you are hesitant to visit a large hospital, consider seeking care at a smaller clinic or a community health center where you may feel more comfortable. It is crucial to prioritize your health and well-being, and seeking medical attention is a proactive step in addressing your ongoing symptoms.
In summary, I recommend the following steps:
1. Consult a Cardiologist: Schedule an appointment with a heart specialist to evaluate your persistent chest tightness and any related symptoms. They can provide a thorough assessment and recommend appropriate tests.
2. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms, including when they occur, their severity, and any potential triggers. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.
3. Consider Mental Health Support: If you are experiencing anxiety or stress related to your health, consider speaking with a mental health professional who can help you manage these feelings.
4. Stay Informed: Continue to educate yourself about vaccine side effects and heart health, but avoid excessive self-diagnosis or worry. Trust your healthcare providers to guide you through this process.
Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health. Seeking medical advice is a responsible step, and you deserve to feel comfortable and healthy.
