Fecal occult blood test (FOBT)
Hello Doctor, I had barbecue, including pork and chicken, 68 hours before my fecal occult blood test.
If the test is conducted using immunochemical methods, will this affect the results? Additionally, I have hemorrhoids, but there is no visible bleeding; will this have any impact? Although the amount of meat I consumed was not large, I used tongs that were used for raw meat to handle the cooked meat.
Could this pose a risk for parasitic infections? (I have not experienced diarrhea.) Thank you.

More Info
The fecal occult blood test (FOBT) is a crucial screening tool used to detect hidden blood in the stool, which can be indicative of various gastrointestinal conditions, including polyps, ulcers, or cancers. Your inquiry about the impact of meat consumption and hemorrhoids on the results of this test is quite relevant, as both dietary factors and underlying health conditions can influence the outcomes.
Firstly, regarding the consumption of grilled meats, particularly pork and chicken, it is important to note that the FOBT, especially the immunochemical version (iFOBT), is designed to be specific for human hemoglobin. This means that while certain foods can affect the color of the stool or may lead to gastrointestinal irritation, they typically do not interfere with the test's ability to detect human blood. The concern with red meat, for example, is that it can sometimes lead to false positives due to the presence of non-human hemoglobin or other substances that mimic blood. However, the amount consumed and the timing of the test in relation to the meal are also critical factors. In your case, since you consumed the meat 68 hours prior to the test, it is unlikely that this would have a significant impact on the results.
As for hemorrhoids, they can indeed complicate the interpretation of FOBT results. Even if there is no visible bleeding, hemorrhoids can sometimes cause minor bleeding that may not be noticeable but could still lead to a positive test result. If you have a history of hemorrhoids, it is advisable to inform your healthcare provider, as they may consider this when interpreting your test results. If the test shows a trace of blood, it could be due to hemorrhoidal bleeding, especially if you have experienced any discomfort or irritation in that area.
Regarding your concern about using utensils that may have come into contact with raw meat, while it is essential to practice good hygiene to prevent foodborne illnesses, the risk of parasites from this specific scenario is relatively low, especially if you have not experienced any gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea. Most parasites that affect humans are transmitted through contaminated food or water, and the likelihood of transmission through properly cooked meat is minimal.
In summary, the consumption of grilled meats shortly before a fecal occult blood test is unlikely to significantly affect the results, particularly with the immunochemical method. Hemorrhoids may have an impact, especially if there is any unnoticed bleeding. It is always best to discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider, who may recommend follow-up testing or further evaluation if necessary. If you have ongoing symptoms or concerns about your gastrointestinal health, a consultation with a gastroenterologist may provide additional insights and peace of mind.
