Taking Norina tablets 5mg?
Hello, doctor.
I haven't had my period for two months, so I went to see a gynecologist.
The doctor prescribed me Norina tablets 5mg, to be taken twice a day, every 12 hours, for three days.
Will my period come immediately after taking this medication, or will I have to wait a few days? Also, could you tell me what the side effects of this medication are? I feel like I've been gaining weight since I started taking it; is this normal?

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, usually menstruation occurs within a week after taking the medication, and it is not related to body weight.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Norina Tablets, which contain the active ingredient Norethisterone, are commonly prescribed to help regulate menstrual cycles, particularly in cases of amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) or irregular periods. When you take Norina Tablets, the expectation is that they can induce a menstrual period, especially if you have not had a period for two months. Typically, after completing the course of medication, you might expect your period to start within a week. However, the exact timing can vary from person to person. Some may experience their period shortly after finishing the medication, while others may take a bit longer. It’s essential to monitor your body’s response and consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns.
Regarding the side effects of Norina Tablets, they can include a range of symptoms, as with many hormonal medications. Common side effects may include nausea, headaches, breast tenderness, mood changes, and weight gain. The weight gain you mentioned could be a result of hormonal changes induced by the medication. Hormonal treatments can sometimes lead to fluid retention or changes in appetite, which might contribute to weight fluctuations. However, if you find that your weight is increasing significantly or if you have other concerning symptoms, it’s crucial to discuss this with your doctor. They can help determine whether the medication is the cause and if any adjustments are necessary.
It’s also important to note that while Norina Tablets are effective in regulating menstrual cycles, they do not contain contraceptive properties. If you are trying to conceive, it’s essential to follow up with your healthcare provider about the best approach for your situation, especially considering your polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) diagnosis. PCOS can complicate fertility, and your doctor may suggest additional treatments or lifestyle changes to enhance your chances of conception.
In summary, while Norina Tablets can help induce a menstrual period, the timing can vary. Side effects, including weight gain, are possible, and it’s important to communicate any concerns with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice and support based on your health history and current situation. Always remember that your health is a priority, and seeking clarification from your doctor is a good practice when taking any medication.
